The FURminator at Cabela's

The FURminator

Author: Dan Carlson

Every dog and cat owner has to deal with shedding. Some breeds leave more hair around the house than others, but one look in your vacuum cleaner bag will show you that there is a lot more pet hair lying around than meets the eye. But now there is a handy and effective tool that greatly reduces shedding by treating it at its source – your pet's undercoat.

the furminator
By removing the loose and dead hairs just beneath your pet's topcoat, you'll not only reduce overall shedding, but will also make your home a more welcoming place for visitors who are allergic to dogs or cats. Makers of the patented FURminator® deShedding™ Tool claim that it quickly and easily removes (it doesn't cut) the loose, dead, undercoat hair that is the underlying source of shedding. To test the effectiveness of the tool, I purchased a medium-size model for use on my black Labrador retriever named Mag.

lets get started
Mag has always tolerated brushing, but has never been a big fan of being groomed. Regular dog brushes usually were able to remove some hair, but I was completely unprepared for the effectiveness of the FURminator. At the start of our grooming session, Mag seemed rather ambivalent about the new gadget.

The FURminator is not to be used vigorously. Short, gentle strokes are recommended. Designed with comfortable ergonomic grip handles, it was very easy for my mother-in-law to use.

easy to use
The tool's unique stainless steel edge grabs loose undercoat hair and removes it without damaging the topcoat. After about a half-dozen strokes it was evident that the FURminator was removing dog hair more effectively and with less effort than any other grooming tool I'd ever seen. As the gentle strokes continued, it also became apparent that Mag was actually enjoying the FURminator. There was no cutting, no pulling, no teasing, just gentle pressure using short strokes.

removes under fur
Makers of the FURminator deShedding Tool say it reduces shedding up to 90% and is guaranteed to reduce shedding better than any brush or comb. They also claim that it brings out the pet's natural oils, leaving a shiny and healthy topcoat. At the end of Mag's 10-minute grooming session, her coat looked better than it has in a very long time. Everyone in our family could see a clear difference in her appearance that lasted for days. Her coat looked clean and shiny, and we observed a noticeable reduction in dog hair on furniture and carpeting, where Mag liked to sit or lie down, after her session with the FURminator.

If there is a downside to this grooming tool, it is that it may be too effective. After just a few minutes of FURminator grooming, we had a large pile of dog hair about a foot across and nearly as high on the carpeting. It cleaned up well with a vacuum cleaner, but I'd suggest that you use your FURminator outside or in a room with flooring that's easy to sweep because you'll be amazed at how much loose and dead hair this tool removes.
