The answer was so simple
I never really experienced an all-day upland hunt until my mid-teens. I was halfway through this field and all the sudden it felt as though my legs instantly gained 50 pounds and it was then that reality slapped me in the face. I just stood there, wondering where this onslaught of pain had come from? Evidently, I hadn't realized the punishment I had been putting my legs through all morning busting brush while trying to keep up with all the guys.
When I finally caught up to my dad, I realized how my dad was able to walk fields all day with never so much as complaining once. He had on a pair of oilskin chaps.
The problem was in the quality
I bought a pair of chaps the next year and used them for a season. I ended up throwing them away because they were shot. The fabric was torn all over and the water-resistant capabilities were nonexistent. So when it came time to start preparing for pheasant season, chaps were the first on my list of things to buy.
Construction was the key
Once I grabbed these chaps off of the hanger, I knew they were the ones. They felt tough and rugged and looked as though they could handle years of punishing use. The fabric was unlike anything I had ever seen or felt. The waxed treatment ensures that they are both wind- and water-resistant. You feel the fabric and immediately understand how it would resist snags, briars and underbrush.
Features that cater specifically to the upland hunter
When I got ready to put them on, I noticed how lightweight the chaps were. But I really noticed it about five minutes into the field because I couldn't even tell I was wearing them. This is huge for the pheasant hunter who likes to put a few miles on in a day. Weight is everything when it comes to endurance and these chaps eliminate that.
In addition to the lack of weight, they also have 15" leg zippers that allow you to slip them on over your boots.
The essential item for easy walking
I can honestly say I will never leave home for an upland trip without my Stonewall Chaps. They are without a doubt the most important piece of clothing I own for upland hunting. Walking fields will never be the same.
