Catch the Early Bite

Author: Terry LaCoss

When mid-morning rolls around, some deep sea fishermen are able to brag about their saltwater catches. Those that have better catches than others are more than likely the fishermen that took advantage of the "Early Morning Bite."

Without a doubt, the best time to hook up to great saltwater fishing action is when the sun begins to peek over the horizon. Skilled fishermen will already have their lines in the water while others may still be chasing bait.

To ensure getting a jump on a great day of fishing, rig your baits the night before. Once they are rigged, ice them down in a cooler. If you are trolling with lures, rig the lures to your terminal tackle so they will be ready to fish at sunrise.

If you need to catch live bait for your next day of fishing, you can catch your bait the day before and put them in a "Bait Motel." This is simply a large pen that is rigged with net and PVC pipe. The bait motel is filled with live baits and tied to the side of your dock or boat.

Always get a good idea the day before your scheduled fishing trip as to where the hottest fishing action is happening. Talk to area fishermen as well as bait and tackle store owners.

You may also get water temperatures from fishing forecast services to insure that you will be heading to the fishing hole that offers the best angling opportunities.

Upon your arrival, always fish the largest structure first. Your biggest catch of the day might come just as the sun begins to rise!
