During the hunting and fishing seasons, I use a single daypack for carrying most of my essential outdoor gear. The TacTikka headlamp is one item I never take out because I always find uses for it, no matter what season it is. This is one headlamp that does everything you need it to do and does it with less weight and more energy efficiency than other headlamps.
The XP's single-strap design is simplistic and comfortable to wear. This contributes to its light weight overall. The elastic headband is adjustable to be one size fits all and can easily be worn over a cap or hat. The lamp body has an ample tilt range. You can direct light at a lower angle to tie on a fishing lure or fly, or concentrate light straight ahead to see what is in front of you when you're walking. The headlamp is water-resistant so you can keep fishing during a rainstorm (my kind of fun).
The single high-output 1-watt LED has three lighting levels (maximum, optimum and economy) along with a boost mode and an emergency blinker. Boost mode increases visibility up to 164 ft. for a maximum of 20 seconds. I have found the economy mode produces enough light for most uses. If I do need extra light I just press the boost button for a few seconds.
The TacTikka has an impressive run time of up to 120 hours on three included AAA batteries. There is even a low-battery indicator light on the side to let you know when you need to conserve its use in the field. The indicator will be green at full power, yellow at half power and red when the batteries are running low.
Included with the unit are four wide-angle lenses in clear, red, blue and green. The colored filters allow you to see in the dark, while preserving your night vision. This will help you avoid lag time between viewing something with a light, then immediately trying to see with the light shut off. Color filters are especially useful for finding a deer stand or moving in to set up for any game before dawn. Four-legged animals are color blind and it will difficult for them to see the colored light. Each of the wide-angle lenses will disperse light over a wider area compared to the more focused beam of the lamp. The lenses are easy to change. All you have to do is slide the lens in front of the lamp. There is a lens carrier on the elastic strap to store an extra filter.
The TacTikka XP combines light weight, brightness and long-lasting power into a headlamp to please everyone, from the occasional weekend warrior to those who live in the outdoors. The price of the TacTikka XP may deter some from taking a look at this gem of a product. Don't let yourself be one of them. With all of its best-in-class attributes, this is one headlamp that is illuminating in more ways than one.
