Spyder Yosemite Down Parka

Author: Adam Bender

The early morning snow had just started to fall and I was beginning to wonder what kind of weather we were in for. I looked up at the temperature gauge in my truck and it read a brisk 8°F. The wind wasn't blowing at all, so the day of ice-fishing was already looking promising. I stepped out of the truck and felt the cold mountain air hit my face. If I could master the cold, I was in for an enjoyable trip

Spyder Yosemite Down Parka
Instant warmth on any cold day
From the moment I put on the parka, I knew this coat was designed for serious warmth. Perhaps it was the feel or just the construction, but I knew that this was a quality jacket and I could tell that I had gotten my money's worth. The overall fit is perfect and I love how it is a little longer than other parkas I have tried, keeping the cold winter air from blowing up my backside.
The 550 fill power duck down was something that I had never experienced before. When I read about down, I heard that sometimes it has the tendency to weigh you down because of the amount of down in the coat. However, this was not the case with the Yosemite. You don't feel weighted down but you do feel the warmth. It feels like being surrounded by a bunch of mini pillows right away, but after few seconds, the jacket begins to adjust with you, thus creating a super-comfortable fit.
Key features that come in very handy
The wind was beginning to pick up as we started our trek across the ice. Wind is every ice-fisherman's worst nightmare because it can turn the best day of fishing into a disaster in the blink of an eye. The wind-resistant, water-repellent shell was nice to have because with every step I wasn't feeling any sort of wind coming through my top half. And it has taped critical seams to prohibit wind and water from penetrating the jacket. Also, the internal drawcords at the waist and hem blocks cold air and snow.
After walking for about twenty minutes, I realized that I was starting to sweat. It was my turn to pull our hut that was loaded with an auger, all our poles, chairs and all the other gear required for a full day of ice-fishing. I then looked to the ventilation zippers in the underarms and regulated the climate from the inside out. I instantly cooled down and the cool air coming into the jacket was quite refreshing.
Take Mother Nature on with confidence
After experiencing all that Mother Nature had to throw at us in one ice-fishing trip, heavy snow, high winds, sleeting rain and extremely cold temperatures, I will say that this parka is hands down the best one money can buy. There was not one thing I could point out as a flaw or drawback and all the features worked perfectly. This jacket was money well spent, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is in need of a dependable, warm and well-constructed jacket.
