I'm pretty tough on my gear, but this was a bit excessive. While fishing out of Tarpon Springs, Fla., this spring, I left my Bone Sneakers on top of the rented SUV to dry overnight. No way, you'll forget them, I reassured myself. Well, it was dark when I left the next morning and, yes, I forgot about them – until I heard them tumble off the roof. I glanced into the rearview mirror and cringed a bit as they bounced several times, battered by four lanes of traffic moving along at 55 mph. Lost cause, I thought. I'll just stop at a sporting goods store and buy a pair of cheap wading booties to get me through this trip, I decided. But by the time I had driven the two miles to the first possible U-turn, I decided these boots were worth a salvage effort. They are that comfortable. To my surprise, the boots were lying pretty close to where I thought they had fallen off. Other than a few tire marks, they looked fine. Even the durable plastic hooks at the top of the lacing system survived. I fished hard for four more days and the Bone Sneakers delivered the same comfort and support they did right out the box – even during a three-mile roundtrip hike to the end of Honeymoon Island. And, yes, I left them inside the SUV the last four nights.
