Under Armour HeatGear for Turkey Hunting

Author: Antone Oseka

Under Armour®. A lot of people are talking about this relative newcomer to the outdoor market. Since the late '90s, they've been breaking into the national consciousness of athletes. Two years ago, I bought my first pieces when replacing my cold-weather base layer.

HeatGear Loose Fit Long-Sleeve Tee - Black
This spring, I've used the HeatGear® Loose Fit Long-Sleeve Tee and Short-Sleeve Camo Tee almost exclusively on my bowhunting quest to kill a turkey. I'm a performance-gear junkie, especially with tees, and my Under Armour is some of the best I own. And, it's what I use the most.
First, the HeatGear fabric does an excellent job of moisture management, especially when the temperatures peak in the afternoon. Sitting inside the blind, as the outside temperature climbs toward 90°, every hunter is uncomfortable. You want to keep as many windows closed as possible so the birds can't see you move, but the black fabric of the blind soaks up the heat.
When wearing a traditional cotton tee, you know it is going to be soaked (and you are probably going to stink). Most of the time, you probably pack an extra shirt to change in to. With Under Armour, the fabric pulls the moisture off the skin and lets even the slightest breeze push it away, keeping you cooler and dry. At the end of the day, you can crawl out of the blind and not feel like you've spent the day in a Native American sweat lodge.
HeatGear Short-Sleeve Camo Tee - Mossy Oak
When hunting in the morning, I've found that layering my HeatGear pieces provides a good combination of warmth and function. By layering the two, you still retain the moisture-management properties the pieces have on their own. Since they retain that breathability, you have a much better chance of being able to dress for the hunt in the morning and not have to peel off layers by midday.
So, what's the downside? Well, the biggest one is that Under Armour has a higher price tag than cotton garments. However, if you follow the "you get what you pay for" or "buy it right the first time" philosophies, then you understand that buying gear like this lasts just as long as several cheap pieces you'd buy in the meantime.
With a couple weeks left in the season, my HeatGear will still be the garments of choice to finally get that gobbler into bow range.
