Super Slam Elite Fleece Pants – a field-test review at Cabela's

Super Slam Elite Fleece Pants – a field-test review

Author: Mark Boardman

If you're in the market for versatile hunting pants that will handle a wide range of weather conditions and hunting situations while remaining waterproof, silent and extremely comfortable, the Cabela's Super Slam® Elite Fleece™ Pants just might be what you're looking for.

I've worn numerous types of hunting pants throughout the years – from classic wool to hunting pants made from today's most advanced textiles. All of them work and have their advantages, but to date, the best I've ever worn are the Super Slam® Elite Fleece™ Pants by Cabela's.

I've worn these pants on hunts for elk in Wyoming, Colorado and Washington, deer in Nebraska, bear in Montana, and on numerous waterfowl and turkey hunts. Weather conditions have run the gamut from mild to freezing to torrential downpours that lasted all day. These pants have always performed flawlessly. When hunting in warmer conditions, such as an early archery elk hunt, simply wear the pants by themselves. But if the weatherman calls for cold or inclement weather, simply pull on a quality base layer and you're good to go.

These pants have an amazing amount of features that come together to make them a pleasure to wear in the field. First of all, the Cabela's Super Slam Elite Fleece is super soft and extremely quiet – even when passing over and through thick foliage. They're also incredibly tough and will give the hardest hunters season after season of reliable use. Add to that their Cabela's-exclusive Dry-Plus® Spectrum membrane, and this fleece outerwear becomes 100% waterproof and breathable to keep you dry on the wettest hunts imaginable.

This new version of Dry-Plus is lighter, more flexible and up to 1-1/2 times more breathable than the original Dry-Plus. As your body temperature rises, the pores within this laminate actually increase in size to permit more vapors to escape without adversely affecting the waterproofness of the garment. The five-pocket construction, including front slash handwarmer pockets with waterproof zippers, offer room for gear and essentials you need to keep close at hand. Articulated knees promote freedom of movement without binding – a big plus when having to cross dead falls and other obstacles. Zippered lower legs with storm flaps allow for easy on and off over boots and adjustment tabs at the waist deliver a secure, custom fit.

The version of these pants that I've used are uninsulated, but they are also available in insulated and Scent-Lok® models. A Parka constructed with the same materials as the pants is available, but I have yet to try it.

The next time you head into the woods, do so wearing Cabela's Super Slam® Elite Fleece™ Pants. They are truly high-performance pants for serious hunters.
