TrailGear2 Floor Liners Review at Cabela's

TrailGear2 Floor Liners Review

Author: Antone Oseka

My truck is a dog-hauling, off-road hunting machine. It’s also a gear-hauling, weekend camping machine. But it’s also my daily drive-to-work machine. It’s the only vehicle I own, so keeping it nice is a top priority.

TrailGear2 Floor Liners
When I bought my truck, I knew it was going to be an all-purpose vehicle. So the first thing I wanted to do was put down a layer of protection on the carpet. I’ve always had vehicles with regular floor mats, so I started with a pair of those. As you know, they work okay, but don’t provide a lot of protection from the elements when you take your truck off-road.
Then, I tried heavy-duty aftermarket flexible floor mats. They provided better protection for the carpets, but I wasn’t happy with their fit under the pedals, especially when wearing larger footwear like boots and waders.

Finally, I decided I wanted to try custom-fit liners that would keep the carpet clean and protected. I chose the Cabela’s TrailGear 2 Floor Liners.
Before installing the liners, I did a deep-cleaning vacuum job on carpet to get up all the rocks and debris left by the previous mats. I wanted the carpets to be clean underneath, but I also wanted to test the liners’ effectiveness. I’ll admit, I was skeptical about their performance vs. traditional mats.
Installation was simple. The liners slid into place, perfectly matching the floor contours of my vehicle. The driver’s side liner also comes with an anchor you screw into the carpet to keep the liner from sliding and interfering with the pedals. Since they are custom cut, the anchor system probably isn’t necessary, but it is reassuring nonetheless.
The custom cut of the liners includes high sides to keep water, mud, rocks and debris on the liner and off the carpet. But the channeled design also pushes that stuff away from the feet and pedals and toward the rear of the liner where it can be dumped out of the truck at the next stop. Unlike some liner systems, the TrailGear 2 tapers the lip at the door, so you can dump a majority of the debris off the liner without having to completely remove it from the vehicle. It also makes getting in and out of your vehicle easier. You may laugh, but I can assure you it’s not funny to catch your feet on your floor liners every time you get in or out of your truck. I’ve seen feet get tangled too many times - especially with guys in heavy hunting waders - to take something like a tapered lip at the door for granted.

I’ve put the liners through some pretty tough situations, including a full waterfowl season and training of my 80+-lb. black Lab in the off-season and they’ve held up beautifully. And, more importantly, the carpets underneath still have the deep-cleaned vacuum job in tact every time I take the liners out to clean them off.

Cleaning, by the way, is very easy. The liners can be hosed off when you’re washing your vehicle. If they’re really caked with mud, you might have to use a light scrub brush on them. Just let them dry and they’ll look good as new when you put them back in.

I really don’t have any complaints about the function or protection provided by the TrailGear 2 Floor Liners. They fit well, stay in place and do an excellent job of protecting the carpet. When I trade this truck in, new custom-fit TrailGear 2s will be the first purchase I make. No more factory mats for me!
