Cabela's XPG™ LI LED Flashlight

Author: Adam Bender

I had just pulled the light off the charger and wanted to see just how bright this thing really was. The next thing I knew, I'm standing there in awe at the beacon of light, shining hundreds of feet into the starry night's sky.

The "Bat Signal" of flashlights

For a second, I thought I was in downtown Gotham City ... not a campsite just outside Rocky Mountain National Park. The only thing missing was the bat in the middle of the beam.

The XPG LI LED is so bright that it made me question how this little light could illuminate so much. The first reason is the light source. It has three Cree LED XRE Lamps that combine to produce up to 534 lumens. At full strength, it gives useful light out to 200 yds. And it's also nice to know that you can use this light from -40° to 140° Fahrenheit.
No batteries required

To be 100% honest, the fact that this light used a rechargeable lithium ion battery and not a single AA or AAA battery was extremely appealing. I am the kind of guy who forgets to replace batteries and finds out the hard way once I'm in elk camp and have a useless headlamp strapped to my head.

With this in mind, before I left for my backcountry hiking trip, I plugged it into the wall charger. Once plugged in, I realized that it also came with a 12-volt car charger as well. So not only could I charge it in the wall, but also in the car. How cool is that?

The recharging mechanism is a technologically advanced feature in itself. Most rechargeable lights have an exposed charging port with a piece of rubber to cover it. However, the XPG's port is covered by a collar made of the same Type II-hard-anodized aluminum as the rest of the body. To access the port, you simply turn the sealed o-ring collar back. Once charging is complete, turn the collar forward again and you're ready to go.

Once fully charged, it has a constant run time of up to 90 minutes. I used it for three days while in the mountains and I never lost brightness or needed to charge it.
Tough construction in a small package

Other high-output lights are simply just too big and bulky to be convenient to use, especially in the backcountry. That's where I think the XPG LI LED gains most of its ground on other lights.

Crafted of CNC machined Type II hard-anodized aluminum, this light is the perfect choice for the outdoorsman who wants solid construction without the weight. Once you hold it, you get this feeling of ruggedness and can trust that this light will take whatever punishment you can throw at it. At only 1 lb., and 2-1/4" x 8-7/8", it fits conveniently in small pockets of day packs and parkas.
The total package

To me, the XPG LI LED represents everything that a top of the line flashlight should be. It encompasses everything that the dedicated outdoor enthusiast wants in a light. The small size, light weight, quality construction and incredible brightness are all there. Now, it's your job to get out there and put it to use.
