The Springfield Model 1866 Allin Conversion was designed by Erskine S. Allin with a total of 25,000 Model 1863 percussion muskets altered by Springfield.  This rifle has a 40 inch barrel (36 5/8 inches to breach face) with three barrel bands.  The rear two barrel bands have been nickeled and all three barrel bands are stamped with a "U".  The barrel is mostly patina and the receiver is mostly silver with some light pitting.  The bore is dark and pitted.  Stock is of smooth walnut with straight grip.  Stock shows a small crack behind the top tang and a crack about 5 inches in length between the front two barrel bands on the right side of the forearm.  The left side of the stock shows military cartouche below the action.
