best for the price,

"Gerber is a great knife on its own merits, when I saw this on sale I figured that I would be getting a good utility knife to put in the travel trailer but after seeing it in person I think I have a new knife for use fishing from my kayak in La Jola, solid edge, very sharp and light weight."

Great knife!,
March 23, 2009
By Anonymous Reviewerfrom Irvine, CA
"This is a great knife. It's amazing to think that Gerber is discontinuing it. The build quality and heft are remarkable. The steel is legendary. It holds a fine edge for a long time and touches up easily with a shaprening steel. The sheath is serviceable but plain. Make yourself a custom sheath and this will become a favorite knife of all time."

Longbow Knife,
March 17, 2009
By Bobbyd444
"The knife itself seems well made with good heft and balance. The blade is a good design and the handle material should help to keep it from slipping from your hands. My only complaint is about the sheath, although made from leather it should have had a better design to it. It appears that with a twist of two in the right spot the sheath and belt loop will seperate leaving your knife where it falls."

"Finally, a product without the Cabela's logo on it! This is a good knife, well made in the USA. It is a little pricey but is very functional for field dressing deer."

Gerber Longbow,
March 17, 2009
By Arizonabuffalofrom Central Arizona
"I really like the knife -nice balance, holds an edge through most of a buffalo. The sheath is kinda marginal, quality-wise. The material feels cheap. I give the knife a 5 and the sheath a 3. I'd buy another one but I would also buy some better leather and sew my own scabbard."

Excellent,
October 20, 2008
By Erikfrom Palm Beach, Florida
"I have used this knife for moose hunting and it is excellent. The gut-hook works great an "unzips" large moose without damaging the inside. Also works great for skinning, although the blade is somewhat big for this purpose. Only draw back is the leather scabbard which has a tendency to get damaged by the sharp blade when you have it attached to your belt and try to put it back in. The snap-strap will very easily get cut as it tends to get in the way of the blade. I also found the snap to inadvertently open when carried in the belt. So to be safe I now carry it in my backpack. But overall a nice knife that works well."

Weak Blade,
July 24, 2008
By UU2004from Salt Lake City, Utah
"I bought this knife thinking it would hold up to the simple use that I would occasionally put it through. It did well through the first deer hunt that I used it on. However, the blade began to chip after I sharpend it just a little for the first time. When using it a bit harder than simply carving into would, a huge chunk of blade broke off making the knife un-useable. The grip and handle of the knife are great, and it worked well until it broke. Unfortunately, it broke after only a couple times out. The sheath is also very poor. I would not recomment this product to other consumers."

Good Solid Knife,
June 29, 2008
By Sothpawfrom Dallas, Pennsylvania Steve Mc
"This is a very good solid knife for the money. I've had it for about 2 years now and i purposely bought it for extreme useage. I have beat this knife with rocks to use for chopping wood to cutting through bone, and its still holding up. What i like about it is the two different hand grips it has. Hold the handle to cut, or move up on the blade for some finer detail work if needed. The sheath could use some work, but i oiled mine up like a baseball glove and broke it. Gave it that rustic look."

Gerber longbow knife,
October 1, 2007
By longbowhunter1234
"I hunt with a longbow, so the name attracted me to the knife. I used the knife on an Alaskan caribou hunt, and it worked better than I had expected. It stayed scary sharp and the gut hook took almost no pressure to use. To be fair, caribou are very, very clean and don't roll around in mud like elk. The dirty, thick hair on a bull can dull your knife quickly. I loved the feel of this knife. The handle is large and fits the hand for powerful work. It would not work well for caping as it is a pretty fat blade. I gave it a 4 out of 5 for 3 reasons: the first is that the sheath looks cheap in comparism to the knife and I am concerned with how long it will hold up. The second is that I noticed a nick in the blade. I have no idea how it got there. Maybe the blade is so sharp because it is so thin and therefore delicate?!? Third, it seemed to tarnish and rust pretty quickly. Next time, I will plan to oil after every use: something that I am not accustomed to having to do in the field. Overall, especially for the price, the knife is wonderful and made short work of 2 caribou without the slightest hint of getting dull. I would highly recommend this product!"

Great Knife, Mediocre Sheath,
August 6, 2007
By Jim71from Denver, CO
"This is a well made knife with good balance, excellent blade composition and a comfortable handle with a nonslip textured rubber handle. Great overall design and quality although the sheath doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. An improved sheath would earn it 5 stars."

Great Steel, Great Knife,
December 7, 2006
By BigBuckEDfrom IDAHO
"Pete Gerber's Presentation series was the pinnacle of factory knives in the 1970's. This Gerber model lives up to that fine tradition. The improvement over the earlier Gerber Presentation knives is the steel used in the Longbow. 154CM was the steel discovered by the legendary custom knifemaker Bob Loveless. It is truly one of the overall best steels you can have in a hunting knife. The ergonomic handle with rubber grip is very easy to use. I agree with previous reviewers that the sheath needs improvement. I made a custom sheath for mine. You can have a local shoe repair shop usually make you one for about $20. This knife will offer you a lifetime of use and it is a steal at this price!"

Long bow Knife,
November 28, 2006
By Dutyfrom Ree Heights, SD
"I wanted a hunting knife with a gerber blade. The blade is shaped nice and heavey enough, but the cutting edge does not hold up to bone real well. Few nicks but it is nothing that a stone can't take care of. Decent shape for caping."

Gerber Greats,
November 26, 2006
By doubleEfrom Midland. MI
"Receiving a new Cabela's catalog is always a little like Christmas and it was an exceptional pleasure to see a new Gerber knife, the "Longbow" listed. I have treasured for over 20 years my Gerber Presentation Knife, and have always regretted not buying another one in the rubber handle version. Now here it was, like a dream come true, another opportunity to buy a new Gerber in the same design. This design has been to me the perfect hunting knife with a drop point and a deep belly that has made deer skinning like cutting butter. I am looking forward to a many great new hunting experiences with my trusted "Longbow" at my side."

Excellent knife at an excellent price.,
November 21, 2006
By Atorfrom Grants Pass, OR
"During my 2006 bowhunting season I took a nice mule deer buck and a large cow elk. There were two other buddies in our hunting party; one took a black bear and a muley buck, the other took a mule deer buck and an elk.
The knife came with a razor sharp edge and I had no problem skinning a large mule deer buck, a very big cow elk, and a black bear before I had to resharpen the knife. Even then I only had to touch up the edge before using the knife on the other animals. This knife is made of excellent steel and tempered well.
The shape of the knife's handle conforms well to my hand and the shape of the blade works well for field dressing. The drop point is excellent for gutting and there is plenty of belly for tough skinning jobs. The thin flat grind gives the blade tremendous cutting power.
Though this is a larger hunting knife, it is still light enough for big skinning jobs. A light knife is important in avoiding hand and wrist fatigue common when larger blades are used for big skinning jobs such as moose and brown bear.
This is a lot of knife for the money. Both my hunting buddies wanted mine when they saw it in action. Maybe Santa will bring them one for Christmas."

Great Knife but a cheap sheeth,
November 19, 2006
By Ben99from Arvada, CO
"This is a great caping knife while you are out in the field. It holds an edge and light weight. The worse thing that happened was that the threads that sew the belt loop onto the sheath actually tore and I almost lost the knife on a 10,000' peak. I think the threads tore from the constant pressure of the knife from the bending and crouching down from hunting positions. If you plan on carrying the knife make sure that you reinforce the sheath;'s belt loop with either rivets or stronger thread. Great knife."
