WISH FILTER WAS SMALLER,
May 11, 2009
By DianaM
"Due to the findings of toxins leaching into plastic water bottles from sitting in hot warehouses (and being a contributor to breast cancer), I decided to buy this straw to filter my water bottles. The filter piece is too large to fit into the water bottle neck. I'll have to find another holder now."

Water in, Giardia Out,

"I bought this so I could drink out of a stream behind my house. After spending the night head hung over a toilet, I figured I might need a filter. I bought this because it was cheap, and sounded effective. After clearing the black carbon dust out, it works great!"

Water On Demand,
December 30, 2008
By HikerEricfrom San Diego, CA
"I used this filter straw on a fast-hike, ultralight trip along the John Muir Trail in July. We covered 215+ miles in eleven days. Trailside water was plentiful, so we rarely carried it unless anticipating a long, waterless pass crossing. I really wanted something to be able to drink water immediately on a rest stop and carry minimum weight at a low cost. I had considered other filters that had a cartridge inside a bike water bottle, but chose the straw due to lightness and low cost.
I combined the straw with a disposable 12 oz. milk bottle that had a plastic screw top. I carried the straw disassembled in a plastic produce bag inside the empty bottle, which rode conveniently in an outer pocket on my pack. To drink, I filled the bottle at the water's edge, then drank down the contents through the straw. I'd shake the excess water out of the filter, repack, and travel on. When I needed a larger volume of water to carry on a waterless stretch or for cooking, I used a 1L water bladder and iodine tablets with a vitamin C based neutralizer.
By trip's end the straw was getting harder to draw through, but still worked sufficiently. My biggest concern was giardia, although cases were fairly rare. If I were going to the undeveloped world or an area where I suspected sewage or more virulent micro-organisms, I might have used one of the UN approved super straws or a full on pump style filter. If I were making the same kind of trip, I would likely use this same rig again."
