Fishcat 10 IR
Date:
Sorry for the long review but this is hopefully helpful. Based on previous reviews and a fair amount of research I purchased the Fishcat 10 IR for a number of reasons: 1- Price. 2- the standing platform. 3 - weight, portability and ease of assembly. 4 - having a motor mount.
I'll add that I emailed Outcast several times prior to buying it through Cabela's and they responded quickly and were very helpful.
Having it shipped to Australia was expensive but compared to what's available here it was still affordable. It arrived in country in 3 days from placing the order - very impressive. Thank you Cabela's and UPS!
The boat is everything I had imagined and I love it. While the assembly instructions are a bit tricky putting the frame together was not too difficult the first time.
The frame is manufactured in China and is painted not powder coated so if you hit rocks etc and make deep scratches you will want to paint them asap.
I almost immediately made some minor changes though. A couple of the frame holes just didn't align too well so I needed to drill them out a bit.
A couple of the pins are secured by split rings. These are fine if you leave the boat assembled for long periods but if taking it apart after every use they are a real pain. I replaced these with R-clips. The included rod holder is useless as far as I'm concerned so I removed it and I mounted a better one on the side rail.
For river use the included mess storage shelf behind the seat may be good. But it is difficult to attach and and useless if you intend to carry a heavy marine battery to run an electric motor. I replaced this with a metal shelf and basket that sits on the side rails and supports the weight of the battery.
The trolling motor mount was a bit narrow and the mounting bracket for the Minn Kota Riptide 45 I use wouldn't clamp down securely. I made a metal sleeve for the mount which widened it and holds the motor better.
I made two oar holders that easily slip onto the side rail so the oars are held next to the pontoon and not in the way. The oars can quickly be removed and placed in the oar locks if needed. I also made an additional rod holder / storage box combo for 3 rods and to toss pliers, a small hand held two-way radio etc in. This I just strap to the top of a pontoon between the two side rails.
These changes are all minor and are personal changes due to the way I use it. Almost totally on freshwater lakes. The MK 45 moves it around easily and quickly but as expected it is affected by its high profile in the wind.
The sitting position is comfortable and great for me at 64. I'm getting better at putting it together at the lake every use. The whole thing easily fits into the back of my 4x4 and takes up little storage room in the garage.
Overall I highly recommend the Fishcat 10 IR for newbies to this sort of thing as I was.
