BEST VALUE IN BLACK POWDER FIREARMS
Date:
I decided to personally select my 1858 Remington New Army Target Model .44 Cal. at my local Cabela's store (during sale) just two weeks ago. I must say Cabela's friendly staff takes all the hassle out of purchasing a firearm and the necessary accessories you might want. I was even given the opportunity to pick from two they had in stock. Since I own several black powder firearms, I did not need the starter kit, but did stock up on Wonder Wads and a fresh can of H triple se7en ffg.
The next day, as suggested in many of the reviews, I gave the gun a thorough cleaning and a close-up inspection. Here’s my results using a scale of 1:10 with10 being the best: METAL POLISH AND BLUEING - 9.2, Better than expected, finding only a few very faint machine marks. WOOD & METAL FITTING - 7.5, Both grip panels exhibited beautiful walnut but required additional hand-fitting to the backstrap to eliminate gaps, and now looks just fine; the brass trigger guard on mine was surprisingly oversized lengthwise and had to use a jeweler’s file to remove the excess before I was able to reassemble it to the frame. Fits perfectly now. TRIGGER - 7.5, No surprise here. I exected the trigger pull to have a little roughness as it comes from the box. I simply used a Dremel Tool to polish the surfaces - NO stoning or filing! Not perfect, but certainly adequate. A professional gunsmith can make the action crisp and smooth. ADJUSTABLE SIGHTS -9.7, The windage adjustment screws are a bit tiny for me. Nonetheless, I prefer having the adjustable sights ...I get far more hits on the target - and these sights are really nice. SHOOTING RESULTS - 9.9, First 3-shots @ 25-yds, grouped 1 1/2 inches and about 1 inch low from a pistol rest. I was using .451 dia. round ball; Wonder Wads, and charged with 24 grs. of Pyrodex P; and Remington #10 caps. No doubt, with some further load testing, this revolver is capable of cloverleaf groups! Just have to work up the load that it likes best. OVERALL RATING: 8.2 Even though mine required a little effort to bring it up to my standards, this revolver remains a solid bargain for the price and is definitely worth your consideration. I don’t know of a better value out there for black powder enthusiast. I know I’m sure glad I got one! Thank you, Cabela’s.
Here is a tip for those new to black powder shooting: Frequently swab the barrel with a good black powder solvent during shooting – at least every 10-12 shots and wipe off any excessive fowling. Do NOT wait until the next day to clean black powder firearms...the sooner, the better. REMINDER: READ BOTH THE SAFETY AND INSTRUCTION MANUALS BEFORE SHOOTING. DON'T BE DISTRACTED WHILE LOADING BLACK POWDER FIREARMS. BE SAFE.
My last comment: BUY THIS REVOLVER

Great blackpowder firearm
Date:
Extremely accurate and fun to shoot and clean. I was stacking lead at 25 feet the first time I shot this 1858 New Army Remington 44. Did my research and Cabelas was best in price and delivery. Thank you for years of fun.

1858 review
Date:
i purchased the 1858 target model with starter kit, and I was very impressed. I have many friends involved in the hobby, and they are also impressed. This was the easiest, most convenient purchase i have ever made online. I have also since purchased many additional accessory items to make cleaning, and loading more efficient, and they also exceded my expectations. Thanks Cabelas! Can't wait for you guys to open a Location in My Area!
