Pietta Model 1858 New Army .44 Caliber Revolver with Starter Kit
The Remington Model 1858 was one of the most powerful and rugged performers of its day. Easily removable/replaceable cylinders made reloading extremely fast. These realistic reproductions boast a polished brass trigger guard and walnut grips. Starter Kit includes: nipple wrench, powder measure, 2-oz. bottle of Cabela’s Black Powder Pistol Lube, a powder flask, 30 lead roundballs, and 30 felt powder wads. Barrel length: 8". Overall length: 14". Weight: 2 lbs. 11-oz.
Only fired this once so far. A get acquainted shoot at 20 yds. Fired about 6 cylinders. Started hitting targets toward the end of the shoot. Not the guns fault. I haven't been shooting in 10 yrs. Next time bench rest and proper targets to zero sights. I like this gun.
Due to a promotion in my Civil War reenactment unit, I needed a side arm. I reserached all options and various dealers. The Remington 1858 was my choice and Pietta is, without question, the most popular replica available. It has a long history of superior finish and performance. That, plus the great price at Cabela's, was all I needed to order mine. It and a spare cylinder, arrived on schedule and exceeded my best dreams. My friends who are active black powder shooters were particularly impressed by the fit and finish and general quality. When I take to the field this spring, my Remington 1858 will be at my side, except when I have it out to impress the spectators and Johnny Rebs!
This revolver was back ordered when I bought it; Cabelas delivered it as was posted. This revolver is great! The fit and finish are outstanding, defects described such as poor fitting stocks, tool marks etc were not evident on my revolver. The accuracy is right on the money. The finish is very dark, even and smooth. The biggest goodie is the trigger action. It breaks smoothly at a very acceptable pull.
A buddy of mine who has a 25-06 rifle with a trigger job said that the action was fantastic. When I told him the price he said that he wants one.
If you even had a passing thought about a black powder revolver this is too cool. I used Pyrodex pistol powder and CCI #10 caps behind Hornady 0.454 balls and had no problems firing 18 rounds. I was concerned that pressing those balls into the cylinder would be tough but I just held the revolver in one hand and the loading lever in the other and just "squoze" em in: no sweat and I am not a muscle man.
