Pietta Model 1851 Navy Civilian .44 Caliber Revolver with Starter Kit
It wasn’t long after the original 1851 Navy became a standard-issue favorite among the U.S. military that Samuel Colt began production of his now famous civilian model. Just like the originals, these accurate reproductions include a silver-plated backstrap and trigger guard, octagon barrel, steel frame and walnut grips. Starter Kit includes: nipple wrench, powder measure, 2-oz. bottle of Cabela’s Black Powder Pistol Lube, a powder flask, 30 lead roundballs, and 30 felt powder wads. Barrel length: 7-1/2". Overall length: 13-1/2". Weight: 2 lbs. 9-oz.
I purchased my "51" online through Cabela's.com. My pistol arrived 2 days earlier than expected. Over all I am happy with my pistol, but it came with some fairly ruff edges on the grip and a few scratchs. The biggest issue was that the barrel wedge was SO tight that when I used my brass punch it slipped and managed to scratch the opening around the wedge.
On the up side, with 20 grains of Hodgdon FFFG is makes a very nice cloud of smoke, a nice boom and very low recoil. Not to mention, at 25 ft I am able to shoot off hand 3 inch groups. We shoot slightly left together but I think its more me than the gun.
Over all, I am happy I bought it but it could have had a touch better workmenship. Would I buy another? yes. I also purchased the starter kit. Everything in it worked perfectly but the flask isnt worth a dime. Buy the brass flask that Cabela's offers. Nice and much safer.
Exactly what I was lookingf for. Case harden frame faithful reproduction of the Navy Colt revolver. Cycling the cylinders you know this is a good piece of engineering. Have not had a chance to fire it yet but it won't be long.
I always thought this firearm was a classic; a very handsome looking revolver. I've always wanted one and found Cabela's replica fit the bill perfectly. Having never used black powder, I was a little hesitant but tried it anyway. I'm absolutely glad that I did. The books that come with it explain its operation well. It takes a little getting used to, and it is different. This all adds to the enjoyment of using black powder. The gun is a joy to shoot with the added pleasure of the nostalgia attached. Checking a reference book after my purchase, I found this to be an exact replica of the original.
I purchased the 1851 civvy model. It is my first powder, but I have plinked with friends. I also own several modern pistols and revolvers. Over all it seems well made with good finishes. The action on this seems very tight. Almost a little too tight but I'm sure that will wear well with use. I haven't fully fired this yet (popped a couple caps after wiping all the shipping lube off of it to blow out the nipples) and am anxious to get somewhere I can load and fire it. It feels comfortable in my hand and seems well balanced. The comments about the starter kit are pretty much right on, but it does say "Starter", so I can use this experience to get a grip on better items. The cap loader is difficult and I may need to just find a better one, the powder flask,,,,,,,,, well enough said. I bought this as a conversation piece, a little plinking and just look forward to having fun shooting.
