Cabela's Alaskan Guide 10x42,October 18, 2009
By nobuckfever987
"I do a lot of hunting....sheep, elk, deer, and moose, in Northern BC. I bought the Cabela's Alaskan Guide 10x42 last year and have used them a fair bit since, though not yet on a sheep hunt, which I believe to be the ultimate test of optics. Excellent quality construction...they don't fog up, they feel solid, and I was surprised by how compact they are.
Compared to hunting partners' Swarovski's and Leica's, they are almost as bright at dusk-the difference is barely noticeable. Took a while to get used to the positive click in the focus knob, but now I kind of like it. It minimizes that constant fine-focusing I've always done with past binos. However, I never feel like they are 100% clear or focused. I'm not impressed with the clarity. My old Bushnell Legend 10x42's had better clarity.
I don't like the eyecups, because they really don't stay put. They need to be stiffer. They need to be re-adjusted 3 out of 5 times that I use the binos...which gets annoying!
Before buying these binos, I tested the Leupold Mohave 10x42, and loved them the moment they hit my eyes. I actually preferred looking through them to the pair of Swarovskis I held in my other hand. I only bought the Cabelas's brand instead because I thought a bit more $$ meant better quality (but still didn't want to spend $1200 to 1800+). But now I wish I had bought the Leupolds instead, because my first impression of them was how clear they were, and easy to look through. But, i read all the excellent reviews on here and decided to try the Alaskan Guides.
Not a huge fan of the higher end binos like Swarovski etc, because you can get $500 binos that will be 95% as good, and will last you 10-15 years easily. Even the high-end binos get scratched up after 15 years and need replacement, depending on use of course. Plus, who knows what glass technology there will be in 10 years? Likely, by then, $300 binos will be as good as today's Swarovskis/Leica/Zeiss....and have a built in range finder to boot!
All in all, these are pretty good binos, BUT...I wouldn't buy them again or recommend them-there are better buys out there, most available through Cabela's."

clear advantage,July 15, 2009
By Jimthelabownerfrom Green River, Wyoming
"These binoculars are an unbelievable bargan. Their compact size and light weight is a real bonus while using them in the mountains where bulk can create problems. Their clearity rivals and in my opinion matches the much more expensive "famous" brand names. I use them in the mountains of Wyoming for extended periods of time while scouting for my next potential trophy animal. They are simply the finest binoculars for the money that I have ever used."

great binocs and great company,July 13, 2009
By idahorockdocfrom the heart of the great state idaho
"I bought my first pair of Alaskan guides (8x42) almost 6 years ago for work and birding. I love the fit in my small hands and ease of use. They go down rivers, ride in saddlebags, get thrown around in vehicles and packs and keep on ticking.
My only problem has been with the eyepieces. I work and live in dry climates with lots of dust. The first pair had problems because the "o"ring in eye piece mechanism dried out and broke. I called Cabelas to get a new part and they just sent new binoculars. You can't ask for better service than that.
I am still not happy with that eyepiece setup. I am afraid to put oil in because it will collect dust, so I put some solid lubricant ( molybdenum powder). That seems to help but it sure is hard to get the moly lub where it needs to go down that little groove.
cabelas customer service people have been very nice but no one had a solution. I would suggest that cabelas trouble shooting team work with these binocs and try to develop a little lub kit or at least guidelines for keeping these eyepeices working smoothly.
Side by side with birding freinds Zeiss or Sv's, I can't tell a difference. I can get on birds an identify as fast or faster than they can.
Am thinking about going to the Euros (10 x 42)."

Great for the $$$,March 15, 2009
By northernbirderfrom Ohio
"I own the 8.5x Swarovski EL's for most of my outdoor excursions. I also wanted a binocular for closer looks and stumbled on the Alaskan Guides. I bought both the 10 x 42 and the 12 x 50's. I carry the 12x 50's at all times for a stationary bird or animal. For the money these are the closest to the EL's , Lecia's, Zeiss, Nikon Premiers etc. In fact if I had known about these before buying the EL's I could be perfectly happy with the Alaskan 8 x 42's as well! For on shore observation I use a tripod mount for the 12 x 50's for excellent lake and shoreline views. Honestly the high end binos have better resolution, detail and a slightly better 3-D effect that only great optics can provide. But for about 1/3 or less the price the Alaskan Guides are 85% as good. Only down side is that the rubber eyecups like to come out. I solved this problem with some rubber cement-carefully applied. I have spent over 30 years evaluating binoculars and scopes. These are the deal of the century. I have recommended the 8 x 42's to many fellow birders whom are very happy with them..."

Very picky about binos,January 15, 2009
By BrigTfrom Paradise, UT
"I have looked at and actually purchased several pairs of binos in the last 2 years that span the entire gammet of nice binos availble. I started out with the Elite 10/42's. But after 1 year, I had trouble with the eye cups sticking, and the strap notches in the sides coming loose. I took those back to Cabelas and got the Leoupold Mojave 10/42's. But while using them on my last Elk hunt in UT, I was not happy with having to constantly try and find focus. They would also fog up a little and they were brand new. Finally i'd decided to take these back also and go down and drop 2500 for top of the line glasses. The guy at the counter had me take a look through the mojave, then the ultravid, then the Alaskan guide's at a clarity test appx 50yds away. I could tell a definate difference in the clarity between the leupold's and the other two. But when comparing the $2500 Ultravid and the cabelas Alaskan guide, I could not tell any difference. I tried severall other brands while trying to decide and could tell a difference in clarity that was equal to the $2000+ glasses I purchased the Alaskan guides and took them on this last falls deer hunt. Wow Complete satisfaction! I love these binos and you will too!! Crisp, clear, no fogging and very affordable!"

Very impressive,November 29, 2008
By judeman9from massena, ny
"I finally purchased the Alaskan Guides 8X42. I initially compared these with Swarovski, Leopold, Zeiss, and Nikon while visiting a Cabela's store. For the money, the slight superiority of the pricier binos dosn't justify the huge price difference. I still hunt thick woods in northern NY and occasionally am blessed to be able to see 100-150yds once leaves fall; the Alaskan Guides are great in the woods. The eye cup covers are really handy (its been snow/rain for the past week since I have had these), though, I would like them secured to the binos (solved with a zip tie). These binos allow me to scan the woods with clarity, even in low light! So far, I am pleased with this quality product."

"Great product. I am now on my second pair due to lenses getting scratched on the first pair (my fault). Sent the first pair in for repair, Cabelas sent me a brand new pair, thank you. I live in Southeast Idaho and we see some pretty harsh weather all year long. These binos held up to rain, snow, mud, and some pretty physical abuse. I have looked at binos that are more money and compared them side by side, for the money they are great optics, would not change. Thank you Cabelas for a great product. Very satisfied customer."

Great binos,September 28, 2008
By Benhuntinfrom montana
"I have been wanting a pair of these binos ever since I tried out a friends pair about five or six years ago while we were guiding in wyoming. The glass is very clear and I love the clickstop diopter. The only thing about them I dont like is the eyecup system on the new models. I wear my eyecups rotated out as far as I can because I do not wear glasses, but these eye cups seem to want to retract on their own so I am constantly forced to rotate them back out and it waists a bit of time. I had to resort in wrapping mine in black electric tape to solve the problem."

great optics,April 7, 2008
By sotxhunterfrom Austin, Tx
"I went into the Cabelas in Buda with the intent to buy a certain pair of binos. The guy at the counter asked me if I would try the Alaskan Guides and just keep an open mind. For grins, we took those and several others outside and tried them out while it was getting dark. I changed my tune real quick and I have been using my Alaskan Guides for a few years now. Excellent clarity, light gathering, and durability. They were also a lot lighter than some of the other high dollar brands. I compared them to several other brands that were comparable in cost, some that were more, and some that cost over twice as much. Some of the highest priced ones were a little more crisp, but not enough to justify paying that much for them. The Alaskan Guides are a great buy."

10X42....Great Binoc's,January 26, 2008
By tjbbmrfrom Indianapolis, IN
"Bought mine in 2003. They have performed flawlessly in deer and elk hunts as well as pro football games. The low light clarity is outstanding. The snap on my carrying case broke last year. I called Cabelas and they sent me a new one! Great service. I did my due diligence back in 2003 and found no better value for the money. It appears it's still the case in 2008."

"I bought these binoculars on the recomendation of my father and couldn't be happier. He has owned these same binoculars for several years and is very satisfied with them. Clear picture. Easy to focus. Comfortable grip. The dust covers that are included are very useful. Without spending a ton of money, these are the best glasses I've used."

Heavy glass user,September 24, 2007
By AKhuntandfishfrom Fairbanks, AK
"After needing some new glass, I sampled, read, researched and used/borrowed binoculars from $300 to $2000 in price. I settled on the 12X50 Alaskan Guides even though I was worried about a little shaking. I used them extensively on my annual moose hunt in possibly the wettest area that Alaska has to offer and have nothing but praise for these. Comparing to the much more expensive binoculars available, my ability to see clearly very late or early in the morning was diminished by, at most 10 minutes compared to the more expensive glass. However the clarity was absolutely NO different. If you want a label, spend 4 figures. If you want quality at a very reasonable price, buy this set."

Alaskan Guide 12 x 50's,August 20, 2007
By bkc1040from Texas
"I love these binoculars. I use them in Texas and Colorado. The clarity is outstanding. In very low light conditions the amount of light they pickup is amazing. When I can't make out small details with my naked eye or scope (Leopold 3 x 9 VX-II) these binoculars pick up enough light to allow me to see. I strongly recommend these binoculars to anyone looking for an excellent buy."

Best Binoculars Made,June 20, 2007
By Blue68from Minnesota
"I bought a pair of the 10X42. Loved them so much I bought the 12X50 also. The sales associate at the binoculars desk was more than willing to take 6 different pairs of binoculars outside to try them out. The Alaska Series was the best by far. These binoculars are tough and they stand by their product. Had problems with the pull up eye pieces, Cabelas address the issue and made an exchange for a new pair. They guaranteed I would have no further problems and they were right."

Alaskan guide binos,April 16, 2007
By builderguyfrom Hayward Wisconsin, Been Hunting 36 years worldwide
"My hunting buddy and I both purchased these binoculars 12 years ago. they have been top quality the entire time and never failed us. they compare with binos three times their cost. I gave mine to a most fantastic tracker in Namibia, Africa so that is why I am buying another pair. I am sure these will last me another 12 years or more. Not many items today can take the punishment and last so long.Best value for your money that I found in a long time. 110% satisfied. Builderguy"
