"i have not tested more than 5 miles offshore but works well in shore. most of my fishing is in the bay but still take it with me offshore in FL, the floatation and water proof is a must have as a back up."

HX750S HANDHELD,June 30, 2009
By Barbaranizerfrom Gibbon, Nebraska
"This 6-watt transmitter is well built. However, the range is terrible. It will only transmit less than 1 mile. This radio should not be used for emergencies. If you are out on the water you will be lucky to contact the next boat. I think a better antenna will improve the transmit ability of this radio. I am returning it because it does not meet my needs to use as a dependable way to communicate on the water. I am using a 1-watt GMRS radio that works a lot better. If you are looking for the ability to transmit on the water make sure you have a long antenna. This way you will be able to call for help in an emergency. If you must have a handheld unit, try and get one with an antenna capable of transmiting more than a mile. Otherwise this is a great radio. Just does not have the range needed for any useful purpose other than communicating at very short distances. I would not recommend this radio for any use on the water. Boaters need to have dependable communications and this radio, although it is very nice, just does not have the ability to transmit using the antenna provided. Good luck!"

Good radio but pricey accessories,March 30, 2009
By Johnfrommdfrom Maryland
"The radio works as designed and has great audio. Features are easy to access and the display is easy to read. It is light enough so it doesn't feel like you are carrying a brick. I keep it on my inflatable life vest and it doesn't bother me at all.
The thermometer function is probably a good thing if you wind up in the water and hyperthermia becomes an issue. It works both in the open air and the water.
I would have given it five stars but the accessories are expensive. The cheapest I can find a AA battery pack for is $25 plus shipping. That's pretty high for a piece of injection molded plastic."
