Good Unit .... BUT,June 28, 2009

"I am a previous owner of a GPSMap 178C which used the same mapping program whether you were using TOPO, BlueChart, or Inland Lakes. This unit uses totally separate mapping programs for CTNavigator and BlueChart. BlueChart isn't very good in the Louisiana Marsh and everbody with a Garmin GPS here uses TOPO. On this unit you can only run TOPO in the CTNavigator program so all waypoints are stored as favorites separate from waypoints in BlueChart and the track features are limited. Additionally you have to reprogram the unit's road features so TOPO works, which defeats the purpose of having a unit to easily switch from car to boat and back. It would have been great had TOPO worked in the BlueChart Program.
But overall the unit works as advertised and BlueChart is great if you are running in the areas it is mapped in. The touch screen works really nice, is a good size, and I find easy to see in sunlight. CTNavigator works just like it does in car only Garmin units of which I have two in my family's other cars. The mounts are well designed and very good quality."

"Don't even think of using this GPS on a boat without a top. CANNOT READ SCREEN in daylight. Not good for bass boats etc. Will probably work on boat with Bimini top or T-Top. The automotive version is cumbersome, with a large external speaker. I like Garmin GPS and waited for 6 months for this one to be available,only to have to return it immediately."

"The GPSMAP 640 would be almost the perfect GPS device and a great upgrade to the older Garmin portable marine chartplotters, but unfortunately Garmin decided not to allow use of Nexrad radar and many of the other weather overlays while in automotive mode. These only work when the unit is in marine mode (i.e no routing or roads).
I'm very disappointed that they obviously restricted this feature since the older units are more than capable of it. Of course, to be fair, if you don't need this feature then it definitely is a great device."
