Hornady Flex Tip Rifle Bullets 30-30 cal.,
September 10, 2009
By hrswhsprr
from Sunbright, TN
|
"Hand loading these 30-30 cal. bullets produced excellent ballistic results. The speed in fps varied only + or - 10 fps on a group of 10 shots. Without having to rezero my rifle, I was able to get <1" groups at 100 yds. I am looking forward to being able to shoot in the 200~300 yd range."

Need better handloading data,
July 23, 2009
By ExtremeSteve
from Millerstown, PA
|
"I purchased these flex tip bullets so I could handload for mine and my daughter's 30/30s. My thought was that I could work up loads to increase the effective range of our rifles during hunting season.
I contacted Hornady and was emailed load data which provided a variety of powders to choose from. The data they sent me however, only achieved a reported maximum 2100 FPS. I tried maximum charges utilizing the data for Reloader 15 & Winchester 748 powders. I was only able to achieve a muzzle velocity of 1950 FPS with both a Winchester and Marlin Rifles.
Since I was dissapointed in the velocity in which the maximum charges achieved I compared the maximum powder charges of the 160 grain Flex Tip Bullets to that of several 170 grain bullets. The recommended Flex Tip Charges were all significantly reduced compared to the heavier 170 grain bullet. I assume ths is to avoid excess pressure buid up since the canelure on the Flex Tip is positioned very high on the bullet causing it to be seated very deeply in the case.
I have been a long time user of Hornady bullets and have achieved great success with there products. However, unless they provide better load work ups fr the Flex Tip Bullets that achieve greater velocity the advantages gained by the Flex Tip's higher ballistic coefficient are negated by the slow velocity. I would recommend against buying them untill these changes are made.
Good Hunting!"

.45 - 250gr for the Muzzleloader,
July 18, 2009
By BuddhaWA54
from Northeast, PA
|
"I decided to try these for my muzzleloader and have been extremely impressed with their accuracy. I'm still figuring out the best load for my gun, but so far these are a front runner. At 75yrds and shooting off of bags, I've been able to touch bullet holes. Only 4 stars because of the price. Can get 100 Hornady XTP's for same price as 50 of these. From what I can tell they're pretty much the same bullet just with an added plastic tip.
Give them a try and decide for yourself!"

Hornady Flex -Tip Bullets,
July 14, 2009
By flyhunt
from Colorado
|
"I ordered the 44 cal. (265gr) Flex-Tips for my Marlin 444S, and discovered that they would not stablize in the 38" twist of the older rifles. Hornady's online data does not recommend them for rifles built prior to 1998 because of stability problems. Bullets should work well in newer rifles with a faster (20") twist barrel."

Use with Hornady brass only,
June 15, 2009
By Williecmo
from Shelbyville, KY, Work as a Consulting Forester
|
"I found out the hard way that Hornady brass in 45/70 is shorter than regular 45/70 brass. That is because the point to this bullet makes it longer than a regular hollow or soft point and they had to reduce the brass length to get the bullet to chamber in a lever action. Place Hornady 45/70 brass and regular 45/70 brass side by side. You'll see the difference.
Other than that -- I like the bullets except I can't use many of my old casings on them."

45/70 reloads with the 325 FTX,
March 28, 2009
By BluegrassandHills
|
"Before you decide to reload the 45/70 with the 325 FTX make sure you have the proper case trimmer capable of trimming the brass down to spec. case length of 2.040" for the FTX. The standard case trim length for lever action of 2.10" properly seated will be to long to feed . All reloading info is now available from the manufacture including powder types and loads . The shorter case allows for less powder capacity and my handload velocity was 2067 vrs. projected 2150 fps.Still produced 3000 fpe. Accuracy was good with 3 shot groups from 1" to 2" at 100 yards. Recoil was very managable. Point of impact at 100 yards was 4" higher than other 300 -400 grain loads at 1900-1600 fps. Penetration for the FTX was not as good as the 350 grain RN but still satisfactory ."

160 Grn Flex tip for 30-30,
March 23, 2009
By BcoGeronimo
from Leesville, La.

"Reloaded this round and went to the range to see the difference, and what a difference. Very nice shot group at a 100 yards, pleasure to shoot at the powder load I charged with using H4895. No problems feeding from tube to chamber at all, was even able to stretch the round in length to gain accuracy with no reload difficulty. highly recommend this bullet, can't wait to hunt with it."

Reloading the 444 Marlin,
March 22, 2009
By GDMARTIN
from Fresno, CA

"These bullets can only be used to reload leverevolution brass as it is shorter than the standard brass. I suppose you could do a load of trimming. Call Hornady for reloading info. The amount of powder needed is quite a bit less due to the shorter case."

.430 FTX,
March 17, 2009
By TheHun
from Wyoming
|
"I purchased this round to load my .44 mag rifle in hopes of increasing the effective range as advertised but discovered it's length did not allow proper feeding with the standard case trim. The tip of the bullet hangs up coming off of the feeding ramp. Also, most .44 dies provide only a flat seater plug which crushes and distorts the new flexible tip. A conical seater is required to avoid this problem. I'm sure more loading data and new equipment will be available in the near future as this bullet is so new to lever gun shooters."

35 cal. flex tip bullets 200 gr,
February 24, 2009
By gunstock
from Kinderhook, NY
|
"With the special scope Cabellas sells for these bullets the accuracy is unbelievable. I would not hesitate taking a whitetail at 300 yards. I do find fault in stopping power. I have very seldom ever used more than 1 shot to kill a whitetail. Once in a great while it would take a second shot to kill it. I have found in the three years I have been using these flex tips, the deer does not seem to acknowledge a hit. My Last buck, since the accuracy is so dependable, was right through the head, slightly below the left eye and out the right upper jaw. The deer shook its head, never went down and traveled a good 40 -50 yards aat a fast pace,I had to use a 2nd shot through the shoulder blades along the spine, from up in a stand, downward to the lungs and it still ran 50-60- yards. My old 200 gr. round nose would stop a deer in it's tracks or at least knock it down, run 50 yards and drop dead. I will still use the new ones and I am trying to find the right kill spot. Until I find its not doing the stopping I want I will then go back to the 200 round nose. Brian"

325gr FTX in a Marlin 45-70,
February 17, 2009
By Anonymous
from Jasper, Alabama
|
"Bullet expands very well in my test but I still haven't gotten to shoot any game with them. I have loaded these bullets to maximum load and they drop about 3 inches more at 200 yards than advertised for the factory loads. I am shooting 150fps faster than factory ammo according to the load data Hornady emailed me."
