Carefully compare the action,June 18, 2009
By BASSORTROUTSTEVEfrom Minneapolis and NY, all species
"I, like many other fishermen , was looking for a more reasonably priced alternative to the Rapala shallow shad rap. Have experience using the Rapala for about 15 years and it is my all around first choice if the fish are in the depth range. The Rad Shad (plastic body)looks very much like the Shad Rap (covered balsa wood). Materials look of good quality. Interesting design of the oval shaped front split ring. The design helps prevent line from getting in the split where the line can be cut. There is a very significant difference in the action of the two lures. The Rap Shad, when looking at it face to face, will flip from side to side from almost an 10:00 position to a 2:00 position. The Shad Rap has little movement in this direction. The major movement/action of the Shad Rap is the rear of the lure flaps from side to side as seen when you are above the lure and look down on it. It looks like the natural movement of a fish moving it's tail while swimming. Because the action is considerably different you can't think of it as a Shad Rap. I'm sure it will catch fish. I've caught some but it will take many trips to make an accurate side by side comparison. My advice is to buy one and compare the action yourself but don't run out of the Rapala Shad Raps."

"I bought a couple of these for trout, spotted bass, and smallmouths. Very affordable and they have a good action. So far I have not experienced the concerns that some have had with lip breaking or coming off."

Suspending Rad Shad,June 10, 2009
By littlenovafrom McHenry, Illinois
"Just returned from a 4 day fishing trip to Lac La Croix, Ontario. The bait of choice up there for small mouth bass seemed to be a 4 inch whiskey colored tube jig. Water temperature ranged from 54 to 57 degrees. The bass were not yet on the beds to begin spawning. Weather conditions made the fishing tough. Cold, rainy and windy. We were tossing tubes and lizards near shore and working slowly back to the boat. After two days of tossing tubes and lizards, I put on what I believed was a Rapala 2 3/4 shallow running shad rap only this rap was different. It sank after hitting the water and it suspended. I varied the retrieve and immediately began catching fish at a rate of 1 every 10 minutes whereas with the tube and lizards it was about 1 every 15 to 20 minutes. What makes the lure special is the suspending quality. A slow retrieve, stopped and twitched was fantastic. I had pike attacking the lure from 6 to 8 feet after it was stopped and twitched. It was only after I called Rapala to find out where to purchase a replacement that I learned that this rap was a Cabelas's exclusive and that the black top white bottom color had been discontinued. After catching 34 fish to my partners 12 on day 3 in some 5 1/2 hours, the rear hook separated from the body. This is an excellent lure. It casted well with my chronarch reel and MH St. Croix crank bait rod, has superb action and most all catches fish."

Too light,May 12, 2009
By dlinebassin
"This lure has the same problems as the Rad Shad, it's too light to cast. I liked the color scheme and the action, but is too light to cast. I tried my baitcaster and my spinning rods with 12 lb. test line and had a difficult time getting good, consistent casts."
