Water Resistant But Not Waterproof,June 24, 2009
By 2fishyfrom Atlantic Highlands, NJ
"I own two of these boxes(3308/3588) and while I like the construction, the hook holding foam inserts, and the size of the boxes, I do have one bone to pick--neither one of them is waterproof!! The gasket and lid seem tight enough when snapped shut, but on a recent fishing trip to the Deerfield River in MA, I was wading in high water with the bottom of my Simms vest partially submerged where these 2 boxes were located in pockets on opposite sides of the vest. I figured that was no problem because they are 'WATERPROOF', and that is one of the main reasons I paid the premium price for them. But, alas, back on shore when I opened the 8-8 pocket box, water dribbled out and while not completely flooded, the box did take on about an ounce or two of water, enough to saturate many of the flies within. I then took out the other box just to check it and to my dismay, that box, too, had taken on several ounces of water on the pockets and in about half of the separate compartments. Both boxes were securely shut in my vest and both leaked!! When I got home I shook the water from both boxes and tamped the compartments and pockets and flies with several paper towels to sop up the loose water and left them open overnight to dry. The next day, being kind of thick-headed, I was wading again with these boxes securely shut in my vest pockets and the same thing happpened, both boxes leaked and had to be dried out. If you're buying these boxes because you want watertight storage for your flies, think again. I would be hard pressed to call them water resistant, let alone waterproof."
