Humminbird 798 CI SI with NVB,October 12, 2009
By Packerbacker28from Wisconsin, Florida, bass, redfish, snook
"I have had mine about 2 months and haven't had time to fully use all the features but it is everything I hoped for. It is very easy to use in basic mode. I am gradually reading the manual and making some changes to fit my needs better. Can't say I fully appreciate or have benefited from side imaging but I think after I get the hang of it and get range dialed in it will be an asset. I have used in on Green Bay and Wisconsin inland lakes. Maps are great. Screen is bright and easy to use in bright sunlight. I would love to have a larger screen but then more money and I couldn't spin it around so I can read it from both steering wheel and front chair. I have a center cockpit bay boat. Plan to use it in Port Charlotte this spring and will really test side imaging for looking under docks for snook. Had occassion to use customer service because maps were not loaded correctly initially and was pleased with the experience. I would buy the unit again and certaily recommend it to friends."

Great product,August 2, 2009
By TNfishfrom Chattanooga, TN
"I would highly recommend the navionics bundle. I have carried hard copy maps of the lakes I fish, and the pre-loaded maps are much more accurate. I have been fishing the same "point" for about a month, the pre-loaded map shows three distinct underwater islands. Upon further review, the pre-loaded map is accurate. It has changed the way I fish this area, and has made it more productive.
This unit does take some time to learn how to use, and reading the side imaging, but it is well worth it once you get the hang of it."

BIRD IS THE WORD, BU, BU, BU, BU, BIRD, BIRD....,July 24, 2009

"We have a 798 on our small boat and a 997 on our big boat and both of them are outstanding. My previous unit was a Lowrance GPS/sonar combo, it took me a long time to learn to use it and even once i did I was still unsure if I was doing thing correctly. I had several problems with the Lowrance unit and Lowrance could't help me out, they send me a new unit and ducer and it still did't work half the time. I sold my Lowrance, I acctually felt guilty selling it to the guy knowing that its such a poor unit.(even though it was a brand new replacement)
The Humminbird 798 is very powerful yet very easy to use and understand. There are no sowftware and hardware glitches, both units have been solid as a rock.
I understand Lowrance is now coming out with a sidescan unit as well. It "looks" cool, but I have been stung once by their poor engineering and support. Not to mention that the transducer is so huge it looks like you might have to buy a jackplate to get your outboard to clear the transducer path.
Bottom line is this 798 is awesome, GPS/SONAR/SI all work extremly well and are simple to use.
I hope that for Lowrance HDS buyers sake, that Lowrance comes out with a product that works properly from the getgo."

Humminbird 798 ci Si Side-Imaging Sonar,July 20, 2009
By Eelpoutfrom Ohio
"Side-imaging reveals structure and fish. It's hard to see the fish detail on the 5 inch screen. However, I saved the sonar output to a high speed SD card. After looking at the images on a laptop, the amount of information is excellent. With the model 798, you almost need a netbook on-board to look at the side imaging.
The downside is that you need third party software to look at the SD card data. Humminbird needs to provide users with software to look at the saved images. An ideal enhancement to this unit would be to have real-time data sent via bluetooth to a netbook or laptop.
I typically record the side imaging and review it after each trip. I found submerged home foundations, roads, and bridges. It's also key to seeing how the fish relate to the structure. Fish appear as white, slightly curved lines.
I believe side imaging would very useful identifying underwater hazards like boulders and stumps.
The model 798 side imaging transducer operates at 455 kHz while the 1100 series models have an additional 800 kHz rate. The faster pings equates to finer detail.
Purchased unit with the Navionics bundle. The lake maps are essential.
The other features are top notch. It also has a flasher. I’ve watched come up after the lure. Overall, this unit is nice."

Humminbird 798,June 4, 2009

"I found everything on this product to be what I expected. I know it has put more fish in the boat for me. I especially liked the different combo screens. The SI screen does take some getting use to and how to interpet it. I have had no problems with this product, once you have the transducer and settings where they need to be. The only thing I would reccommend when purchasing this product is to buy the biggest screen you can afford."
