Stay out on the water longer, thanks to digital pulse technology in VariMax motors. It maximizes your battery life more efficiently than conventional multispeed motors. Where other motors require you to chose from one of a number of fixed speed settings, the digital technology in these motors gives you infinitely variable speed control. In on-the-water-tests, VariMax motors operated three to five times longer than motors without pulse technology, yet the price of the motors is comparable. Large-diameter 1.25" aluminum shafts are strong, yet lightweight. Intuitive push/pull directional control optimizes your ability to steer and control your boat at precise speeds with the powerful 3.5"-diameter motor. A quick-release friction grip and mount tilt release make the motor easy to stow and deploy with seven tilt positions. The one-touch depth collar makes motor height adjustment fast and easy. VariMax motors are outfitted with extending handles to accommodate the comfort of anglers of any size.
12-volt VariMAX Trolling motors include a one-year manufacture's warranty; 24-volt motors include a two-year warranty.

The negatives outweigh the positives,November 15, 2009
By Ukey28from Long Island, NY
"I use my 55# motor on a 14 foot Jon. The handle was difficult to assemble( 40 Minutes). The motor runs exceptionally well in open water. I love the variable speed as it can be dialed down to very slow. At high speed it moves the boat well, and my battery lasts all day. But if it nicks a small amount of weed it just shuts down. Not a lot of weed is needed, just a small clump. You then must wait a moment or two for it to run again. You have to turn it to off and then turn it back on again for the motor to restart. If it still feels a small amount of weed on the prop, it won't run. The tilt mechanism is difficult to manage and it can be a bit balky when trying to lock it. If it ran better in weed I'd probably never comment on the other issues but add them together and the motor leaves you wanting. I leave the motor on the boat and when it rains the handle fills with water, when you tilt the motor up to run it, the water come pouring out into the boat or on your leg. I fish a lot at night and the indicator lights showing speed and battery level are a great asset. However they should be red and not blue as the bright blue LED's ruin your night vision. Red colored lights would not diminish it as much. I put red tape over the lights to mellow them out."

Works great,October 25, 2009
By Nussyfrom Green Bay, WI
"I bought this motor (55lb) in the spring for a small boat but ended it up using it mostly for my 18' pontoon boat as a bow mount motor. The power is fantastic and I never even came close to running out of battery. Most of the time it would position me where I wanted to go on the lowest setting.
Love the power setting lights and battery indicator, not to mention the battery life I get.
The reason I gave it 4 stars is I don't like the push/pull change of direction. Using it on my pontoon, I turn it a lot with a foot or a leg and it's too easy to shift it into reverse. Wish the would have stayed old school for that function.
There was a also a recall on it which I'll have to get fixed this winter.
All being said, I would definitely buy it again."

Returned,August 31, 2009
By Babutfrom Vermont
"I recieved the 55 HT motor as a gift, and was excited about it because it has variable speed. I used it once for about three hours.
Major defect - After 2.5 hours of stop and go use, the motor kept running when the handle was in the off position. It returned to normal after I disconnected it from the battey for about ten minutes. It turns out that other reviewers (not listed at Cabelas) have had similar problems. I retuned it because of this.
Minor flaws - It was difficult to change the angle of the motor because the spring loaded button/knob required quite a bit of pressure to move back and forth, particularly from within the boat. Also, it was a little noisy and vibrated more than others that I have used."

Ran for ever,July 29, 2009
By Anonymousfrom Troy NY
"I read alot about the different motors and choose the Varimax from MotorGuide . I fished all week without having to charge the battery . I like the fact that you can dial in the speed you want and are not limited to 5 forward and 3 reverse like some other motors. The power of the 55 thrust was nice to have and this baby ran pretty much noise free. So if you want to fish and not worry about killing your battery this is the one to get. I like the fact that you can see how much charge is left in the battery when you shut it off it gives you a read out. A nice feature"

MotorGuide Varimax 55HT,July 1, 2009
By Pikebossfrom Upper Michigan
"The motor operates flawlesley and has plenty of power to manuver as well as troll. All of the adjustments are easy and can be done quickly. The only disadvantage is that the digital speed control causes disturbance and false reading on my fish finder."

Finally a motor made for endurance.,April 27, 2009
By VonDfrom Clarinda, Iowa
"I owned a minnkota motor for years. I was never happy with it's performance. The VariMax motor is awesome. I can now stay on the water all day without running my battery down or loosing power. In fact at the end of the day after using the motor almost constantly, I still had over half of the charge left in my battery. Even on a windy day! It is also very quiet, I had fish hitting right at the boat with the motor running. That's quiet!
I am a true MotorGuide fan now and totally happy with this purchase. Thank you MotorGuide for making my fishing day even greater.
Thank you Cabela's for carrying this motor."
