MotorGuide Varimax™ 40 HT

Stay out on the water longer, thanks to digital pulse technology in VariMax motors. It maximizes your battery life more efficiently than conventional multispeed motors. Where other motors require you to chose from one of a number of fixed speed settings, the digital technology in these motors gives you infinitely variable speed control. In on-the-water-tests, VariMax motors operated three to five times longer than motors without pulse technology, yet the price of the motors is comparable. Large-diameter 1.25" aluminum shafts are strong, yet lightweight. Intuitive push/pull directional control optimizes your ability to steer and control your boat at precise speeds with the powerful 3.5"-diameter motor. A quick-release friction grip and mount tilt release make the motor easy to stow and deploy with seven tilt positions. The one-touch depth collar makes motor height adjustment fast and easy. VariMax motors are outfitted with extending handles to accommodate the comfort of anglers of any size. 12-volt VariMAX Trolling motors include a one-year manufacture's warranty; 24-volt motors include a two-year warranty.

"Overall I like the motor so far. Have only used it twice so it is a little soon to know for sure. The motor seems to draw little power. I trolled with the motor for over 4 hours and only used 15 % of my battery. The motor has pleanty of power for my small boat. I really hate the handle set up on this motor. I do not like the way you have to mess around with the locking collar to adjust the length of the handle. I am not real impressed with the push,pull forward reverse switch as it is real easy to change directions when you do not want to. The mounting bracket and tilt button are real stiff. The tilt button is real hard to operate. I think this will get better as the motor gets more use. Overall for what I paid for this motor I am very happy with the performance of the motor."

"Motorguide did an excellent job with the functionality (able to switch from a transom mount to a bow mount by using an allen wrench) of this motor. The push/pull system is extremely easy to use and the BlueVis display can easily be seen in the sunlight and it's comforting being able to tell how much battery reserve I have to ensure that I will make it back to the dock. What's really impressive and unprecidented is the efficiency at which this trolling motor operates. I fished for 9 hours without running down the battery. Because of the variable speed, I am able to "dial-in" the speed to a point where I can hold the boat in one place and make repeated casts. I could not do this with my older 5 speed trolling motor. I also like the 1.25" shaft because I don't have to worry about hitting a stump and bending it like the typical 1 1/8" shaft motors. The taper lock mount is well engineered and much better than any other mount on a hand controlled trolling motor.
One thing with absolute certainty is that fishing with these motors will increase yours odds of a successful day on the water because it's very efficient and functional. I highly recommend this motor and can promise you that you will enjoy this trolling motor. This is a great trolling Motor!!!!!!!"

Sent Mine back to Cabelas and contacted Motorguide, April 21, 2009

"The push in and out for forward reverse is horible- will not stay in one position.

The weight of trolling motor makes it slower than the old t-34.

The lever to push in to make trolling motor tilt is hard to work.

Terrible decision but Thanks to Cabelas I returned mine.

Also slow response time from going to forward/reverse."
