Connection for USB phone and iPod charger and DC-in
You never know when an emergency situation will develop, but you can be prepared if one does. The Eton FR500 has what you need to access valuable information that could save your life. It monitors all seven NOAA weather radio frequencies and has an alert tone that will sound when severe weather threatens your location. The government will also use those same frequencies and alert features to keep you informed in the event of a civil emergency that isn't weather-related. It also receives standard AM/FM and shortwave radio frequencies. If electrical service should fail, this radio won't be affected. It has a built-in battery pack that can be recharged by cranking an integrated charging handle. You can also use the recharging handle to charge your cell phone battery using the built-in cell-phone charger. If the sun is shining, integrated solar panels use solar power to charge the unit. Built-in lighting options include four white LED lights and one red LED with a magnifying lens to cast useful red light that won't impede your night vision. A flashing beacon and emergency siren could help search and rescue crews locate you if necessary. The 12-hour digital clock display is outfitted with an alarm, snooze button and sleep timer. Connection points for headphones, USB phone charger, iPod charger and DC-in (AC adapter not included) all have rubber gasket or rubber plug seals to make the unit resistant to moisture. All of these features are packed into a compact and sturdy unit.

Eton FR500 Solar Radio (won't charge),June 30, 2009
By doesntworkfrom Washington State
"This "solar powered" radio, that's supposed to charge in sunlight, won't. The "charge" light lights when in direct sunlight, but even after over 8 hours, 30 seconds after removing it from the light, all indications go out. The tech support was useless. I'm returning this radio to Cabela's for a refund. I will add, I've been a customer of Cabela's for a long time and this is the first time I've ever been disappointed."

Not impressed,February 1, 2009
By Rebel1043from Knoxville TN
"I got this radio as a gift for Christmas. While it looks sturdy, the dials are flimsy and cheaply made. The reception is not as good as a pocket radio that I use for football games and such. The battery and dynamo setting work good. Worst feature of all is the claim that the solar panel will charge the battery. I've putting the radio in the sun constantly for a month. It can sit in the sun for days and it will not have the capacity to charge anything! When you put the radio on the solar setting it plays the radio or powers the flashlight for less than a minute and then the power goes off. I would love to return this junk but won't since I got it a s gift."

Disappointing,December 30, 2008
By ZacIIfrom Champaign, IL
"I liked the combination of features on the radio, but the execution leaves much to be desired. FM reception is very poor. I cannot pick up the local PBS station. I was looking digital tuning, but the digital readout with a tuning knob, just does not work very well. The band selector is the outside ring of the same knob. The band selector changes when you try to tune the radio, and it keeps sliding off the selection so the indicator lights say two bands are selected at the same time. The tuning knob is very figity, and the tuner won't stay on the selected frequency, once it is selected. If would like this radio if the tuner worked, and it had decent reception. As it is, I am considering returning it."

eton fr500 solarlink radio,November 28, 2008

"After 5 days of using the radio I can say that it has very good sound for a radio of this type. It seems to be well built and has some useful features such as the solar charger and I assume it could also solar charge your cellphone. The radio can also be charged from your computer if you have a small electronics usb cable. I used my gps cable but I think my camera cable would have also worked, and it fully charges in just a few minutes from the computer. The 4 led light surprised me with its brightness but the 1red led is a flashing light meant more for signaling. The radio reception is good on am-fm and if you are near a strong fm signal raising the antenna will overwhelm it. The shortwave has some weaknesses but is usable as a basic sw receiver. While the radio is not perfect it gets 5 stars because it sounds great and it does what a radio of this type should do,while also doing a lot more than your basic wind-up can radio."
