"I had been shopping for a gun safe for some time now. I looked at everything Cabelas had, as well as a couple other well-known outdoor supply stores which also carry gun safes. I had limitations on the safe I was going to buy because I needed to keep it on the main floor of my house, so weight was a big issue.
Of course there is some comprising done when going with lighter safes; less fire protection, thinner guage steel construction, etc.
So for my situation of wanting a big enough safe, yet keeping it around 600-700lbs it came down to this Cannon Wide Body and another comparable model from a different company (but with dial lock). I like the digital keypad- convenient to get into, and I can change my code if needed. Can't do that with a dial.
I had looked at two different Cabela stores at their display models for this safe, and finally decided this was the one for me. Plus, the Cabelas store had a sale on any in-stock safes. Notice in the pics for this safe the gun slots are arranged in a 'radial pattern' around the walls and divider. Now look at the Tall Wide Body model and you'll see the guns slots have three parallel rows of 5 guns each. Even though both safes are the same width and depth, they have different layouts of gun slots. I liked the radial pattern of gun slots, and I didn't want the tall model, so this Wide Body model was perfect for me.
I picked it up from the Cabela's store, still on the shipping pallet and in its cardboard carton, and got it home. With the rental of a heavy-duty appliance dolly and a couple of friends it wasn't too bad to get into the house.
When I installed the battery and opened it up for the first time, I saw that for some reason this safe had the gun slot layout of the Tall model (with three parallel rows each side), which isn't what I wanted. None of the store displays, or the catalog/website pics have this model showing the parallel gun layout, so you might want to double check what you're getting if you decide to buy this safe. I called Cabelas and explained that this safe had the wrong layout in it, and they are going to try to get me the correct layout for my safe. We shall see if that happens.
I was almost leaning to give this safe a 4-star rating for having the wrong layout. Another reason I was thinking about 4 stars would be that it has a black interior- it is quite dark and I'll probably be installing some battery powered LED lights under the top shelf. The comparable safe from another manufacturer has a light grey interior which is better for seeing in there.
But you have to consider the 'bang for the buck' factor, and that's why I still give it 5 stars. I'm very happy with the safe. I know its limitations with fire rating and construction, and it fits my needs perfectly. Like you have probably read elsewhere, gun storage ratings (like '30 guns') for safes are a lot like person ratings for tents. When they say a 6 man tent, that really means it'll work pretty well for 2 or 3 people.
Same with gun safe storage. With the three parallel slot layout, you can't put scoped rifles in the back row because there isn't enough clearance on the back wall. And the front row needs to have them barrel down in order for the door to close. I knew about that when purchasing, just something to think about when buying. Buy the safe bigger than you think you need- it will fill up fast. Not only with guns, but documents, valuables, etc.
All in all, I love this safe. Even though it is only 600lbs, you can still lag it to the floor joist with provided corner holes in the floor of the safe. We'll see if Cabelas comes through with getting me the correct gun layout for my safe. I would buy this safe again, and would recommend it to others that may be concerned with the weight of the safe, and with a budget in mind."

"I did a lot of research before I bought this safe. Honestly, it seems there are a few that are right with this one in quality, but the Cannon safes have a warranty that is just a bit better than any other out there. I agree that this Cabela's-branded Cannon safe may not win any beauty contests, but its a workhorse that will protect your firearms, documents and anything else you keep in it. Buy this. You won't regret it."

"This safe is Cabela's "Brand" but manufactured by Cannon so its my understanding it comes with a free shipping lifetime replacement if it is ever damaged by attempted theft. It's definately a workhorse and not necessarily a show pony. The exterior is not high gloss fancy like the Browning safes and the interior was a little rougher than I would have liked initially. Once its in place and bolted down and loaded with guns its just as secure is any safe I have seen. LOADS od space and the shelves are very modular to be changed to suit whatever set up works best. Hopefully we won't have to see how it stands up in a fire. Very happy with the purchase."
