Just Some Facts,November 3, 2009

"I got this Pistol Vault today and it is sturdier steel than I thought I would get for the money. There are mounting holes on both sides (3 each) and on top and bottom (4 each). The overall quality is good and the lines are clean and square. The pain job is good glossy black. The buttons on the front panel are fairly large and easy to read. To get your gun out you have to enter your code and then just lightly push in on the top left part of the door and it springs open. It does not automatically spring open. The instructions said this is so that if you enter your code, but do not open the door, it can then lock itself again. Just for fun I punched in my new "password" as fast as I could and the electronics accepted them and worked fine. The battery holder is glued and velcroed onto the inside left side next to the electronics panel and you have to reach in and pry it off so you can insert your 4 AA batteries (not included) and then you attach the battery pack to the wire with the 9 volt transistor radio battery ends on it (mine broke as soon as I pressed it on (the 9 volt end cap wire came loose) but still maintained enough contact to work). That little wire with the 9 volt end cap on it is pretty flimsy (my only dissapointment) so just be careful with yours and you shouldn't have any problem. Now your all set to enter your "new code"... Be careful here, I locked myself out of it for a while by misreading the instructions (not hard to do). I had to wait a minute or so for it to reset and get back into it with the original factory code and try again. The little "programming button" can be hard to find (I used a mirror and flashlight to find it) it is on the inside right next to the panel (very small black button). Once I got it programmed I was very happy with it. So far. I feel it is a good quality piece of additional safety gear for my pistols at a very reasonable price."

A disaster in the making,October 10, 2009

"The box is quite strong and includes hardware to mount it to a shelf, wall or cabinet. My unit failed, in the locked mode, within 24 hours of setting it up. The green light showed the correct code was entered, but the solenoid failed to unlock the door. Fortunately there was nothing in it at the time, but imagine the consequences of such a failure: There is no way to service it from outside, and the box is designed to keep you out. You have to cut it open. If you have mounted the box to a fixed object, you are going to have to rip it away from that object because the supplied lag screws attach from inside the box. Suppose you have three pistols inside when it fails. Are you going to ship a steel box containing three loose pistols back to Homak for service? I don't think so. You will have to find someone with a cutting torch to open the box, with potentially bad results for the polymer frames and grips of your handguns in the process. A really bad day all around. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT."

"I ordered this item knowing you get what you pay for, this is one instance where most expecations were exceded. Locking mechanism works great. This safe can hold quite a bit of whatever it is you'd like to put in it, i have 3 handguns in mine. My only complaint is the padding material doesn't measure up to what I would like. I will funrish my own and then it will be perfect.
Great product would definatly recommend this to anyone. Had a friend buy a different model before i purchased this, he is now wishing he spent less and got this item."

"I bought this vault for our Motorhome. It is a good fit for the application. Price is right and provides adequate storage for pistol and other valuables.
The combination was difficult to program, but if you read a follow instructions you can get it programmed. I would be a great feature to have an override key as an added safety. My concern is that the battery will die and I will forget were I put the manual with the factory default code."

Lock mechanism failed,April 12, 2009

"I've had this pistol vault for a full week and it has failed to open twice for me. Maybe I got a lemon, but I cannot fully trust this vault for home defense. In both cases, the electronics worked fine. It recognizes my code, but I don't hear the lock mechanism unlock and I cannot open the vault. The first time it failed, was the first day I bought it when I was setting it up. On another note, the owner's manual is vague and confusing. Anyway, I managed to get the vault open by striking the door with my fist. I chalked the malfunction up to user error and reset the code. I mounted the pistol vault on a wall on my closet and stored my handgun. For the past 7 days, I have tried opening and closing the vault several times to make sure I could get to my handgun. This morning, it failed to open. I ended up using tools to pry the door open. I will hopefully return the Homak Pistol Vault to my local Cabela's and exchange it for a GunVault-brand product. There needs to be some kind of mechanical override, such as a key, if the electronic keypad fails to operate the lock mechanism."

"This is a nice, solidly built unit. I like the fact that it has an external set of terminals to apply a battery if the internal ones go dead. I had alot of trouble finding the reset button to reset the combination, and finally ending up emailing Homak to find out where it was, as the instructions were not clear at all. I did receive a reply which specified the location. At that point I already memorized the factory code, so I haven't changed it. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it, and probably would have rated it 5 stars if the instructions were a little better."
