Best Product Ever,October 28, 2009
By MaineLakerfrom Northern Maine
"If you have ever spent time looking for a lost dog, its the worst feeling in the world. When it happens, you'd pay anything to meet up and head home. We have a camp in northern Maine. You lose a dog up here, you are not in a good spot. Nobody is going to find the dog for you. You can't leave them out there so you build a fire and set down to wait. Long, no frills night in the north woods. We have two lab/brittanys and one runs rabbits. 600 yards goes by in the blink of an eye. I'd ask her to stop but... This past weekend I was up on a beech ridge and birds were busting off in all directions. One covey after another. It was too much. With a 15-20 mph NW wind, the whistle was useless. Gone. Thick cover, rolling hills. At 600 yards, they were up-wind, looking for me. I followed them for a mile. They split up (bad). At whatever distance, the 10s update started blinking out. I climbed up high (just like in the manual) bingo, back on again. I was two miles in and they were back at the truck! What if I didn't know that? In the past year, I have closed the gap and got to within whistle range on these dogs more times than I can count. If you have dogs, do NOT buy a GPS outside the Astro. The maps are fine. I hooked it up to a laptop and transferred tracks to Google Earth to lay out a snowmobile trail. It was on the mark within feet. Its not perfect. -Get a carrying case of some kind for the GPS. Its huge with the antennas. The buttons get pushed in a pocket. -The collars are awesome, but a tough dog will destroy one in a seaon. You can buy new parts. Don't sweat it. -The aluminum(?) plates are not good with salt water. Rinse or lose. -If you lose the dog signal in hills or cover, don't lose faith. Get up high. Its physics. Same deal as with hand held radios. -The chargers don't always make contact with the collars. As long as they do, it works great. -For the most part, you will be able to watch your dog real time. I have intercepted rabbits with it. However, not always. But if you use it right, you chances of losing a dog are very, very small.
I suggest you take the money you were going to spend on a new shotgun and put it toward this system."

Astro DC 30 GPS Dog Tracking System,September 10, 2009
By rickf2from Northern California
"My first use of the Astro DC30 was on a recent trip to my mountain property that is located at 6500 ft in the Sierra's. I was concerned that the GPS and radio system wouldn't pick up well in the heavy timber, but I was pleasantly surprized. My setter took off one afternoon when I wasn't paying attention and I "picked" her up on the handheld about 290 yards away, chasing after something. It was easy to track her in the direction indicated and get her back. I haven't purchased or loaded any of the topo maps, but I do plan on getting them. There are many features I'm still getting used but so far this has been a great tool and will use it when I'm quail or chukar hunting in unfamiliar teritory. Only minor issue thus far is the function that tells whether he’s running, sitting, on point or treeing quarry. The running and sitting seem to work fine but system doesn't seem to know a point....it keeps showing its treed quarry. Again, this is minor."

Saved hours of searching,April 5, 2009
By macgyverjunior
"We own some acreage and have a new hound that loves to chase the elk. The first time we took him up there, he disappeared before we had even started to unload the truck. We spent 5 hours searching for him and luckily, just before dark, he found HIS way back to camp, otherwise I don't think we would have ever found him.
We bought one of these units for our next trip to the property, and sure enough, before we could even get him on a lead, he was gone again. This time, the Garmin lead us right to him. We had him back in the truck within minutes. Took away some of his fun, but saved us a lot of grief."

No Go,March 23, 2009
By furdsfrom OK
"The Garmin Astro did not work for me. The GPS first of all was not accurate at all. I own a Garmin 60CSx. With them side by side the Astro could only zone into +-72ft, while the CSx was +-12ft. With the Astro so far off, my position on the map would randomly move as it tried to pick up more satellites. The next problem was that after the dog's signal was picked up and mapped, it would not refresh to the dogs new position. It was stuck on that first reading. I had to turn off the collar and then back on. That seemed to fix it for about 5 min until it got stuck again. I had high hopes. I give it two stars because it is a cool idea in theory. I am sticking to bell and beeper."

Garmin Astro,February 24, 2009
By HiloHawaiifrom Hilo,HI
"I like the Garmin Astro when it works. I noticed I would lose signals on the dogs when they would go about 600 meters. Sometimes it would lock in a position & the dog isn't there anymore but showing it's there. If the range would be better & battery life would be longer it would be perfect. I would recommed it if your dogs stay in 600 meter range in the forest. Right now I'm on the border line if I want to keep it."

Big island hunting with Garmin Astro DC30,February 23, 2009
By BigIslandHoghunterfrom Big Island Hawaii
"I think this is an excellent product for close to medium ranging dogs. The 2 types of mountain terrain that I tried it out in was Open ranch land and dense rain forest. In the ranch or open terrain it worked excellent. I was able to pick my dogs up all day and monitor there every move. The farthest my dog ranged that day was about 2 miles and I never lost the signal on them. In the rain forest it worked ok. The distance I was able to acquire an accurate signal was up to ½ mile. The one major down side to the GPS tracking collars is the battery life."

Astro 220,February 22, 2009
By Jaspersdadfrom Alaska
"Awesome product. I've had it for a couple of years, since it first came out. It used to have a harness for the dog instead of a collar and even though a little bulky and awkward in the brush it always worked great and never let me down. Now with the DC 30 collar it works even better. I feel allmost duty bound to let people know that this product really works well and is reliable. If your main concern is keeping track of your dog I can't imagine you would not be satisfied with it."

Worth the money,February 17, 2009
By haftohuntfrom Neligh, Nebraska
"I was hesitant when I bought this because of the price, but it is worth it. I use it to keep track of my GSP's. I live in the country and ocassionally they would wonder off the premises, chasing a bunny Etc. Doing what hunting dogs like to do best hunt. This tracker allows me to know where they are at all times. It will save you lots of time and energy tracking them down. I have found the range in hilly terrain to be a little over a mile, not 5 miles but plenty for my needs. If you loose contact it will warn you and guide you to the last known spot, so it is not a problem. MY maximum range is 2 miles under good conditions. I am assuming trees and powerlines and weather conditions are the culprit."

Nice System - But Nylon Collar Material is Poor,December 30, 2008
By Rileysrollingtrailsfrom Allendale, MI
"I use the system for Beagles.
The pro's: 1. It's great to know when your dogs are coming to you when you are calling them. If they are not coming to you, there's other products that can improve that behavior.
2. You know the charge left in your collars when they communicate with the receiver. No more dead batteries during a long hunt.
3. You won't always cross roads or rivers when tracking to your hound. Just look at the GPS and drive closer or around rivers if you can. With the radio collars, you never knew what you were crossing on the way to your hound.
4. Track multiple dogs on the screen at once.
The con's:
1. Nylon collar material is a extremely poor choice. My collars have about 25 hours on them and they are beginning to fray. The nylon freezes up in the snow, and you can't get them off the dog until it thaws.
2. Collor length is too long, and the warranty is void if you alter. This is foolish. With beagles the collar is so long it drags on the ground.
3. The transmitter on the collar is still too big for beagles. The beagles hit there legs on it when running. They are sore after six hours on the ground
4. The collar will not adjust small enough for small neck pups.
5. On / Off switch on collar is difficult to switch when your hands are cold and the collar is froze.
6. Collars only come in black color. You can't even look at the receiver to understand what collar is what unless you spread them out 15 yards apart.
The concerns I have:
1. The charging connection on the collar does not seem durable enough to withstand the mud of a swamp for extended use. We will soon find out.
2. The nylon material may not hold up in the briars this spring.
3. The receiver does not have good options for carrying it, and I'm afraid I will drop it and lose it. You can put it in your pocket, but you pull it out so much. They include a belt clip, but those have failed me with other products. They include a wrist strap, but who in the world would carry the receiver all day on the wrist.
Overall
1. Best all around tracking system I've used, and I've been running hounds for 15 years in the nastiest places you would not want to go.
2. Worst convience for hard hunting (20 - 25 hours / week) packs. Nylon is very poor choice, no collar color options, not allowed to shorten collar length, too big for beagles and not able to tighten sufficently on small dogs."

Highly Recommend,December 30, 2008
By Imusgirlfrom Oklahoma
"We live on 450 acres with two herding dogs and cattle. We are thrilled with the Garmin Astro DC 30 GPS Tracking System and collars (we purchased one additional collar). We track our dogs from the house and know exactly where they are at all times. The second collar was a snap to program, just laid it on the GPS and pushed the button. The collars are waterproof and the dogs wear them every day, dawn to dark. They had no break-in time as the collars are designed exceptionally well including "riding" right on both dogs. We use the 5 sec interval and batteries last all day on both collars. Hunters will be thrilled with the additional hunting features although just for tracking our dogs in the pasture the system is well worth the price."

poor product poor support,December 28, 2008
By drostatefrom Frederick, OK
"I bought my astro after reading its reviews, and I am extremely dissapointed. My transmitter will only record the spot where I first put the collar on. I will expect a full refund. What is really bad I bought 2 extra collars to go with it, a sandisk, and a topo map set dvd to go with it. As far as I am concerned at this point a new drag rope is just as useful and about a $1000 cheaper at this point. My friend bought one and is works only half of the time, he should consider himself fortunate. Tech support has bankers hours and as we all know hunters do to, NOT!!! Garmin will recieve its third phone call in two weeks and I am sure it will be to no avail again."

Way gone dogs,December 16, 2008
By Pointnfrom IL
"Wow, what a great training tool as well as a great hunting device. The wild birds (mainly pheasants) have been getting wise to the beeper collars. The Astro eliminates that weak link in trying to find your dog on point. The handheld unit beeps when the dog goes on point and it always knows where your dog is at (how far and which way)."
