"Cabelas is 1st class in all they do. Through all my years of buying product from cabela's they have never let me down. I ordered this Garmin Astro DC30 Combo from Cabelas and it arrived just as promised and with no delays. I am a deer hunter and recently purchased a really good deer beagle and was tossed between the telemetry collars and the Garmin Gps. There are pro's and cons to both. The biggest con to the Garmin is the battery life of the rechargeable collar however the beauty of the Garmin is that I KNOW exactly where the dog is at all times and how far away the dog is by meters or yards. It also features a compass to direct you to retrieve your dog. If the signal is lost which is rare the unit keeps the spot of the dogs last location. I used this unit for the first time recently and it is super simple and extremely effective. The Garmin also maps the route your dog runs and tracks his speed and distance covered. The ability to see where your dog has run and in which directions is awesome. This unit also provides a feature to show if your dog is moving or has " treed" its quarry. So if your dog happens to get caught in a fence The astro will take you right to the dog. I am buying some more collars for the Garmin which will support up to 10 collars. By the way here on the east coast our tree canopy is rather thick and I had only lapse in the collar coverage when my dog chased a deer into the water. I was originally on the fence about this purchase but have no regrets at all now. I strongly recommend the Garmin Astro DC30. One last thing, The Garmin GPS is excellent even when not using the collars and super simple to use."

"The DC 20 was a brilliant concept with poor design. Any dog that is a true hunting dog will get the DC 20 antenna ripped off during normal hunting conditions. Without the antenna the unit is j u n k.
The DC 30 appears to resolve the antenna problem, I just ordered one.
I'm disappointed in that I now have a DC 20 that I have to figure out how to customized so the antenna does not get ripped off. The DC 20 may be something I try to get rid of."

"I chose Cabellas, because they are well established dealer, have a good return policy, and have some discounts based on purchase amount, etc. This winter holiday I received my new Astro 220 / DC 30. It works well so far on running field trials with my brittany. The Astro 220 Garmin is not compatiable with the Rino radio /GPS Units. So you do not have the capability to communicate with fellow hunters or friends using Rinos :-(. That aside the unit works well and has similar features like other GPS units though not as initially as user friendly as traditional Garmin basic GPS units. Though you can do all the GPS stuff as any other basic handheld field GPS units. Play with the unit and flip through the manual and it all works fine. Back to tracking my dog, it does well. I am a desert cross-country recreational runner and hiker and I like my dog to work /run patterns as he is breed to do. The Astro 220 allows him to run patterns even if I lose site of him. I use a silent whistle to turn him. Now at a glance I can see him headed back. The Astro 220 allows me at a glance at the handheld, keep running, and know where & what my dog is doing. I also like the ease it clips on my waist or carry in my hand. If I was an avid hunter or backcountry outdoorsman using dogs, I would look closely at a Tracker® radio dog collars and receivers. The Trackers® are extremely light weight, get hundreds of hours use per charge, some are AKC approved for field trials, and newer receivers allow you to locate your dog easier than the older receivers."

"I hike with my 2 standard poodles on the desert every morning. I do from 4 to 6 miles each AM, I wasn't sure how far they went until I got the DC30 (one for earch) and accompanying Astro GPS. My guys have never been lost, but when they take off after a rabbit, they can disappear from site for a long time.
The DC30 and Astro give me peace of mind because I always know where the guys are, even when they're off after a rabbit. I can look at the compass or map display to see where they are and what they're doing.
I HIGHLY recommend this set of products for anyone that takes their dogs hiking or camping in the wilds, but wants the peace of mind to know where they are at all times."

"Works very good. It is a useful tool, It looses communication between collars and GPS easy but picks back up when you get closer. The only problem is the SD card will not stay in place so I have to shut it off and put the card back into place."

"The DC 30 is definitely a step up from Gramin's first collar, the DC 20, the DC 30 is more durable, lighter, and rides better on the dogs neck. The range is also quite a bit better than that of the their previous collar. If you have the Astro tracking system and use it on wide ranging hounds I would definitely recommend trying the new collars."

"I purchased the Astro 220 Dog Tracking "system" originally with the DC-20 collar. For purposes of field trial training it was functional but due to the antenna issue and attachment to the dog it was far from perfect. The DC-30 collar is right on target! The size, weight, natural position on the dog are good design. In conjunction with the tracking software, topo maps and accuracy of distance and ease of use, it will be very hard to find a better value and functional tool. There are two issues that I would like Garmin to address in future enhancements: (1) the refresh rate of 5 seconds is slow when training, especially young dogs - 1 or 2 seconds would be preferable (2) the collar will absorb water and mud and will eventually be difficult to thread easily. The AKC and AFTCA currently do not allow this collar in competition. If Garmin continues to reduce the weight of the total package, I'm sure the DC-30 will eventually be acceptable in competition. Overal, I really like this collar and the Astro 220 system."
