Budget Machete,

"I bought this tool for making ground blinds and chopping baits for trap sets. I purchased the smaller of the two models. Good things: its light, its sharp, it has a saw back, it works right out of the box.
Bad things: its light weight limits the bite into wood so harder swings and more frequent swings result which can tire you quicker in the backcountry. The sheath is very cheap and the belt strap broke 10 minutes into the woods, I awled new holes in the field and made tie wire belt loop which has lasted the season and will make a couple more.
Summation: The tool has only the weight as a trade off that plus the cheap sheath and I still give it a 4 decent value."

Good but could be better.,

"The steel Gerber uses for the machete is great. I love the handle too. My two main problems are with the blade edge and the saw teeth. The blade is duller than my father in law's sense of humor and needed to be sharpened right out of the package. I used a carbide sharpening tool that I use for my expensive bypass pruners to put an edge on the machete that you could shave with. The saw teeth aren't ground evenly either. Twenty minutes with a thin mill file and the saw teeth are much better. I definitely expected better workmanship from a company like Gerber..."

"For the money this tool is definatly worth it. It has a great saw for long strokes. The blade is great for reaching the higher twigs on a tree and clearing small brush to set up your tent."

broke, first good whack,

"broken 3 inches in front of the handle. it is obvious that Gerber heat treated it after cutting the saw teeth and it cracked at the bottom of one of the gullets about half way through the blade. will be returning it ASAP>."

"I haven't had the chance to hack through some brush...yet. I'm not worried about it though, because it's a well constructed design and it came very sharp, right out of the box. It comes with a nice sheath and the machete has a comfortable rubberized grip.
P.S. The blade is a little bigger than I expected."

"Not a bad blade but after a couple good slices the handle came loose. You can tighten it but then the screws come out on the other side and get in the way of your grip. The blade holds a good edge but the handle could use some improvement."

"I purchased this machete last year. the blade was very sharp and stayed sharp. the saw was great too. I only used it once last year and twice this year. Today I started to use it and the handle broke off. Any descent knife would have the blade run though and to the butt of the handle. This blade ends right at the beginning of the handle, is held on by four 1/8" long plastic dimples and one bolt. This design was born to fail. I really loved this machete, if I new that it was made this way I would never have purchased it. If the steel went all the way through the handle as it should have, I would have gladly paid twice the price. I'm going to call Gerber and see what they have to say. I hope they have found there error and have fixed it. But for 4" more steel, you go from a great tool to a waste of money."

"I purchased this machete for use around the house to clear brush, it has worked great for me only flaw is the blade could be a bit more ridged and not so Flexible aside from that I'm very pleased and rate it a 4 because although it isn't ridged it is well balanced and razor sharp still after extensive use."

"When I order this I was not sure if it would be heavy enough, but it is powder coated and is a full 1/8" thick with a hollow ground edge. I have not had time to try the saw on the backside of the machete but the handle is coated with a over lay of rubber and fits your hand like a glove, this is a great product and this fall I can't wait to try it out on some new shooting lanes. Buy this Machete Jr. you want be sorry."

"This machete is a good fit for backpacking, camping, or just to have around. It's not as long or blade-heavy as many machetes, but this machete is very functional. I watched my brother cut out a notch from log roughly 5" in diameter with straight edge, and then flip the blade over and saw cleanly through the remaining wood. It feels good in the hand and can be given a really nice edge (it comes with a good working edge, so this isn't necessary). Time will tell about durability, but it seems to be very well constructed, yet easy to disassemble and clean if necessary. The sheath is also quite nice, a perfect fit for the machete and comfortable to wear. I bought this one as gift, but may wind up with one myself."
