it works like its supposed to,November 16, 2009
By freundfrom Wellsboro PA
"Well I got one and my best friend and I tried it out and it lit nicely but was damp and the magnesium was too spread out but the flint produces nice sparks. The flint is fairly soft though so buy 2. One to practice with and one for real survival and fire circumstances and on comments about it dulling blades. This its a metallic alloy that will dull blades but depending on how bad your blade is depends on how bad it dulls. It is very hot burning. Magnesium burns at over 5,400 degrees F. This is a beautiful tinder starter."

great fire starting tool,October 19, 2009
By TRAVIS903from Kanses city,MO
"i recieved this a few years back as a christmas present, i was a bit skeptical of how it works and, if it even would work. well, i tested it out on my deck(bad idea) i shaved off about 4 grams of the magnesium and struck the flint with my small swiss army knife, 4 GRAMS IS WAY TO MUCH!!!!!, the magnesium lit and sent a flame that was pretty close to white hot aroud 6 inches into the air, it also left a nice bur mark on my deck, i never got to use the flintstick because the flint flew off the block and shatterd. That was after striking it about 500 times. point is, this is a great emergency fire starter for hiking, hunting and fishing in the backcountry."

Pretty good fire starter!,September 12, 2009
By PAHunterAlfrom Pennsylvania
"This is the first flint fire starter that i've owned and its pretty good. It sparks a lot, fits in your pocket, and its easy to use. The only thing that i didnt like about it was it gets worn out quickley and leaves an ash-like material on your knife but comes off easily, thats the reason for the 4 stars."

Warm your hands & feet or have a sharp knife?,August 11, 2009
By Dogwaterfrom Florida, Michigan, & South Dakota
"O.K., shaving the magnesium and scraping the ferrocium striker to ignite the shavings will dull your knife, but when was the last time you warmed yourself over a sharp knife? I suggest that you either use the rear part of the cutting edge of your blade or even the back edge of your blade to scrape and spark or that you attach a scraper/sparker to the keychain that IS ALREADY ATTACHED TO THE MAGNESIUM FIRESTARTER. Now, it is true that a scraper/sparker perhaps should be included with the firestarter but I suppose the manufacturer decided to let those with a modicum of intelligence do a little thinking on their own."

Excellent fire starter,June 23, 2009
By NWerfrom Wenatchee, WA
"I take this camping for "practice". It's a fun way to light a fire and with a little practice, (twist the knife in your wrist as opposed to moving your whole arm), you'll have roaring blazes in seconds. Magnesium burns hot!!"

Old ones are great, new ones stink,June 21, 2009
By Anonymousfrom FL
"There are 2 types out there. The old ones worked REALLY well and it sparked great. The new ones, you WILL have a hard time getting a spark out of the ferrocium (flint) rod. You can tell the difference by looking at the "flint". If it is darker in color and close to black, you will spark easy. If it is greyish in color, similar to the magnesium just a bit darker, you will have a hard time creating a spark. I already called about this and voiced my complaint. If they switch back to the old ferrocium, it will get 5 stars again."

Works,May 31, 2009
By AaronUTfrom Provo,UT
"This is just great! Carefully scrape some of the magnesium off with an old blade (I just used a blade I never used on my multitool) onto a piece of paper or some fine tinder and you will have fire in less then 5 min total time. With Practice less then 2 min. Took it out out survival camping in the Uintas of Utah last week and never needed my lighter. 3 Fires all with this tool in less then 5 min each time. 1 fire I used a gas receipt to hold the shavings on and the other two some dry bark shavings. For less then 10 bucks this thing is well worth it. Give it a try! Leave one in your car or in your Emergency kit. As for me, it'll be in my pocket on any outdoors trip."

would work in an emergency but not practical,April 2, 2009
By timmy96815from Honolulu, HI
"I gave it 2 instead of 1 star because it probably would work if you were in an emergency and didn't mind dulling your knife. Who carries a hacksaw blade or whatever with them hunting or camping? I tried it and I couldn't get enough magnesium. I ended up using my lighter and paper from the bag I brought my food in. Also the magnesium is hard to control. The spark comes off pretty good. I am going to get a striker instead."
