IR-X Illuminator,July 14, 2007
By GizzardWizardfrom Oliver Springs, Tennessee
"The Leaf River IR-X Illuminator is excellent for what it is designed to do, but you may not need it with the IR3-BU Leaf River infrared camera. It will illuminate 5 to 10 feet farther than the camera alone (up to 40 feet!), but that is well beyond the ideal focus range of the camera, which is 10-15 feet. The camera illuminator is good to 25 feet, but it is in a narrow angle of only 25-30 degrees straight in front of the lens, leaving the edges of the photo darker at night. Since the angle of the motion detector is wider than the angle of the camera illuminator, some night pictures show dark images on the edges as wildlife enter the detector field. The best use of this product is to use two illuminators and angle them slightly to the right and left of the camera lens, to "fill-flash" the edges of the photo. If you want to use one for greater distance photos, mount it as high as possible (5 feet) above the camera and aim it at a higher angle than the camera's illuminator, so the light is directed beyond the camera flash range. Otherwise, closer photos will be overexposed by the two illuminators. While infrared photos do not have the quality of visible light digital photos, the things you can see wildlife do undisturbed by a bright flash are worth it!"
