    The 10 X 14 or the 10 X 10?, September 26, 2009
    By Anonymous from Iowa

"I bought the 10 x 14 model, given that I have two young kids and lots of toddler gear gets brought along. There is a lot of floor space on this model and it is well suited for car camping. It stayed dry during a week of rain, and held up to the kids' constant abuse. I especially liked that you do not need guy lines for this tent-- kids inevitably get "clothes-lined" running around after dark. It's simple to set up, stays up, and stays cooler in the summer than poly tents.

The roof length on the 10 X 14 model, however, is only 16 inches longer than the 10 X 10 model-- which means the larger tent has considerably more slope to the end walls to gain that four extra feet on the floor. The 10 X 10 is far better at maximizing vertical space, if that is important to you. The center height of the 10 X 14 is less than advertised; it slopes towards the center. I am 6'4" and my head brushes the tent ceiling everwhere but at the ends of the tent. There are only a few metal grommets on the tent, and they are not the best quality. Mine are showing surface rusting already.

The rest of the tent is probably over-built, which has some pros and cons. It will hold up to juvenile retrievers and young kids. The canvas is probably heavier than need be and I think it interferes with breathability. Same for the mesh for the windows and doors-- it is too fine and doesn't let the breeze flow as freely as it should.

Overall, I'd get the tent again & recommend to others, but take a good look at the smaller model as it may suit your needs better.

    Kodiak 10 x 14, September 21, 2009
By Nstukan from Santa Clara, CA

"This is the best tent I have ever owned. This replaced my 10 year old Eureka 9 x 12 canvas cabin tent. I debated purchasing the 10 x 10 or 10 x 14 for along time and am Very happy that I purchased the 10x14. Since it is not completely straight walled the extra 4" come real handy in storing gear. My son and I really like the room. We easily fit two cots with all our dirtbike riding gear inside and still have room to move around. During our latest 4 night, long weekend riding trip, I set the tent up easily by myself (not possible with the old Eureka tent) in 20 min. The most difficult part was driving in the 18 stakes. The rest was very easy. Take down was quicker and very easy, the tent bag makes it so easy to store the tent since it wraps around the folded tent. I love this tent."

The perfect tent, September 18, 2009
By CampnRide from Maryland Eastern Shore

"The sale price on the 10 X 10 and reviews posted on Cabela's made my eventual decision easy.

I've been using this tent for horse camping over 3 long weekends. It is simple to setup and take down. I've done it by myself and I'm a 50 year old woman. The design and pole system are amazing. It rained twice overnight and I didn't even know it occurred until the next morning.

The hanging gadgets are perfect for storage. I really like the "loft". It gets things off the floor and out of the way. Not that there's anything wrong with the floor. Next to the zippers, it's probably the strongest part of the tent and cleans up easily.

I call this tent my "fort" because it's built like it's indestructible.

You will not be sorry you bought this tent. I'm looking forward to years of camping and riding with my new Kodiak.

Great tent for the buck, September 18, 2009
    By Anonymous from elberton ga

"I got this tent from cabelas last year in the winter. The first time i used it, it leaked bad from the roof. no leaks in the walls. got a gallon of canvak and it still leaked. Put 8 cans of scotch guard on top of that, no leaks now, like a rubber mat. I must say that this is the best tent i have ever owned. Its the 10x14 and i put it up by myself. heavy duty very very thick floor, extra heavy duty poles and never had any problems with the zippers. I used it this past winter in about 30 degree weather with a big buddy heater and had very little condensation. I have had 2 double air matresses, a cooler, 4 bows, camo for 4 and a small table in this tent at one time. Very good roof height. I dont beleave anybody makes a tent any better for the price!!!!!!!"

Best tent I've ever had, September 13, 2009
By hurricanecrab from Cayman Brac, Cayman Islands

"After Cat 4/5 Hurricane Paloma decimated our Caribbean island, we spent a bit of time in our old screen tent, until we could restore power to our house (three months later).

We got the Kodiak Flex Bow recently, to replace our old, rotted screen tent. We wanted a tent that was weather-tight, UV-resistant, and easy to set up. The Flex Bow is made to fit those parameters.

We set it up the day we got it, and just took my Bride and I 1/2 hour. We sprayed it down with water (per manufacturer's directions as a first-time application) and were pleased to see the water run off the canvas. Not a single drop penetrated.

I initially thought it would be a hot tent, as it has no windows on the ends (the long side ends). It was not. Even in the heat of the day (96 degrees), the air flow was remarkable, with both doors, both windows and the small 9" triangular vents in the ends open, however with the screens still zipped up.

This tent is very well made, and very strong. The zippers are strong, and have flaps to cover them. There are several loops and two "cargo nets" for stowing gear. Very roomy 10 X 14, means that two people can have a bed of any size and still have room for other gear. Floor is very thick and strong.

Have you ever struggled with getting a tent back into the bag it came in? I have, with every other tent I've ever had except this one. The included hefty 1-foot stakes (18) have their own canvas bag. The metal poles have their own bag, and the bag the tent lives in lays FLAT, and you put the rolled-up tent on it, and snap it around the tent; it even has a strong nylon handle.

I'm very grateful to Cabela's and their customers, as this tent was purchased on the strength of others' reviews. It's not a cheap tent, and it's not a lightweight tent (about 90 lbs. for all of the gear) but it IS the best and most durable tent I've ever had. Now here we are, hoping we never have to use it in the aftermath of a hurricane, but secure in the knowledge that it will keep us dry, cool and bug-free should the situation arise again.

Worth the money, September 10, 2009
    By pharmgirl from Griffin, GA

"Received my Flex Bow and immediately set it up by myself in about 10 minutes and watered it down as per instructions. Was unable to take it down for several days because of heavy rains over the next two days. Was very happy that there was not a drop of water on the inside when I did. This is a well designed and constructed tent with lots of room. The floor is really heavy duty but the canvas seemed a little thin when compared to the canvas tents of yester-year. But, as they say: They don't make things like they used too. Overall a very nice tent that I believe will provide years of service. On the negative side, there were two items. First I was a little disappointed that on of the spring-loaded mechanisms that secures one of the windows when rolled up was missing. Secondly, the stakes bag, which is made of the same canvas as the tent is not heavy duty enough for the stakes. I already have a small hole in the bag after one use."

"I really like this tent. I do a great deal of camping buy myself. This is the best tent I have every purchased. I put the tent up in my back yard before I went camping and took me about thirty minutes to put it up. When I went camping it took me fifteen minutes to put it up. I like all of the windows that allow plenty of fresh air to inter the tent. I am going to camp this winter in the snow. I will let you know how it worked."

Absolutely the Best Tent!!!!, August 19, 2009
    By KGTOPUS

"I purchased this tent based on all the reviews online at Cabelas - and it has surpassed all expectations and is the envy of my brothers and dad. I have the 10 by 14 tent - I can set it up all by myself in about 15 minutes, and it is 100% waterproof. I am the mother of two boys (6 and 9) and I did not want to worry about the tent being flimsy or trying to secure a rainfly. This tent is sturdy - it does not budge even with a great dane and two boys wrestling inside -- it does not leak, even in pacific northwest downpours, and it does not move in high winds."

    Wonderful Tent, August 13, 2009
    By padrebear

"Just set up my new Kodiak 10x10 canvas tent. As advertised, set up is easy and quick. Took me about 20 minutes. As per instructions I hosed down the tent to season it. Beaded like water off a duck. What a joy to be able to stand upright with arms held out and not be touching the ceiling or sides of the tent. This thing is spacious! Checked all the seams, zippers etc. Couldn't find any defects. First impression - great quality. Am looking forward to first outing in Black Hills of South Dakota or fishing on Lake Oahe. Gave rating of 4 stars because I have not used yet. If it performs as others say (in rain, wind) I would gladly give it 5 stars."

    Great Tent, August 9, 2009
    By RickCamper

"We tent camp 3 - 4 times per summer. Ordered a Kodiak Flex Bow tent because of dissatisfaction with previous tents for space (dome tents have inefficient use of area) or leaking at the seams. After 2 uses we have not been disappointed- no leaks in first rain and it was very solid in a fairly strong wind. With the almost vertical walls, we can actually use most of the interior space. The tent is well made with heavy duty zippers and hardware. It is the easiest tent we have owned to set-up and take down. The tent is heavy (about 80 #s) so it could be difficult for one person to handle. The tent stakes are twice as big as most tent stakes, my only complaint is that one of the stakes was cracked on the bend and broke on the second camping trip."

    Excelent tent, July 14, 2009
    By catfish99 from DENVER CO

"I was real nervous about spending so much on a tent but even more nervous spending another night in a wet tent with my family. I have bought and returned 4 tents the last 2 years, due to leaky seems or broken poles. Heard about the Kodiak and went for it. Best money ive spent in awhile. Spent 5 nights on the family trip inside this tent. It rained everyday and the wind was strong at times. Very pleased with this tent"

    heavy duty, June 29, 2009
    By hobbydog from Minnesota

"I did a lot of research before buying this including the reviews on this site. It is easy to set up. Lots of stakes to pound....18 I believe. Once the stakes are pounded in, it is about 2 minutes to set up by yourself. The steaks are very heavy duty as is the poles. The poles and steaks are a big part of the wieght that makes up the this tent. The vinal flooring is very solid and waterproof. That works both ways...any water that gets tracked in will have to be wiped up before folding up. The zippers are all heavy duty and should last a long time (it is what gave out early on my Eureka). THe fabric is very breatable, you notice this when you roll it up....the air purges right through the canvas...anyone who has rolled up a nylon tent knows it can be tough to get all the air out unless you roll it to the open door. The bag to pack it in is a great plus....very slick design. The 10X14 is very roomy and has lots of hooks and loops on the inside to hang stuff from.

It is not very sexy looking and is kind of old school but from a functional standpoint it is an excellent tent. My only hesitation was weight and that is not a problem other than some of the fly-in trips I take where weight is an issue. I expect to get many years of heavy use from this tent.

    Woods Springbar, June 27, 2009
By milest from Enfield, Nova Scotia

"Back in 1971 I bought the Woods Springbar version of this tent. It's withstood high winds and rain so heavy it was like a fire hose directed at the tent.

The Kodiak's window arrangement is different, and it has one big plus I often wondered about - an awning over the door.

Sure it's a bit bulky and heavy, compared to the nylon/aluminum frame tents, but it's one person setup, dead easy and fast.

Back in 1972, outside of Calgary, my family and I arrived at the same time as a family with a hard top tent-trailer. Not wanting to mess about in the dark I pumped up and lit the Coleman lantern, then put up the tent while my wife marched the kids off to brush their teeth.

We were snug in our sleeping bags - listening to them still bashing away.

It's faded now, well used, and hold a lot of memories.

Minor downside - it is not self supporting and relies on its pegs to resist the tension of the end poles - springbars - but the whole concept is marvelous.

Yeah - I'd recommend it. And yes, we still have it.

    Cheers - Miles

Worth every penny, June 15, 2009
    By Badawg from Southern California

"2nd trip with the tent. Went to a festival that was in the desert at 4000ft altitude. It was cold and very windy. Set the tent up in under 15 minutes including raking out the rocks and loose cactus spines in 25mph winds. it was 46 degrees when we got there and the sun was not down yet. It was very nice in the tent though with 3 bodies and a candle lamp. I do believe that the candle heated the tent a little bit...

Next morning dawned bright and sunny, and still very windy. You would never know in that tent. We had stayed up late so we slept in until 10AM. When I got out all the other tents around us but my friend's Springbar had been vacated with the denizens going in search of shade. It stayed nice and cool in the tent all day with the windows cracked. Wind just kept blowing and and we had gusts in the 40s. The tent barely moved. Several others collapsed...

That night was another cold one and we left the kids in the tent with cards and a Coleman lamp(vents open...) And when I got back from my shift at the stage, it was 75 degrees in the tent, and 45 outside.

Next morning(Sunday) Had the same experience of sleeping in and not being baked alive like in a nylon tent.

In just 2 trips I know I chose wisely. You can't go wrong with this tent as long as you understand it's heavy and bulky. The only thing I would(and will) change is the closure for the pole bag. It's a piece of ribbon sewn near the end and it's a little too short. I am going to attach a strap from a bike peddle toe clip. It will be easier to use and more secure.

    Conclusions:

Great big roomy tent that looks like it will last for many years. Quality is really there and the attention to detail is excellent. Materials are high quality. Carry bags are well thought out. I would give it a 5 out of 5, but I have not really been in any weather yet. In two weeks I will be up in a high desert pass with strong winds and will update after that. And I will be camped next to a friend's brand new "budget" Springbar so I will do a comparison with pics.

Easy Set-Up and Take Down, May 25, 2009
    By FishCreekPondsHereWeCome from Ashburn, VA

"Received the 14 by 10 tent today and did a trial set-up in front yard, prior to the big trip to Fish Creek Ponds, Adirondack Mountains in August. This is a heavy duty canvas tent. It is not free-standing. You must stake it in the ground first. Then you thread two spring steel rods through two pouches on opposite sides of the top of the tent. Then you lay two T-bars out on top of the tent, perpendicular to the spring bars, and connect the spring rods in to the T-bars. Then you connect the two pieces of the T-bar in the middle, which will be under pressure, and slide a reinforcing tube over the connection. Lastly, raise two outside poles which connect into the end of the T-Bar connected to the spring bars. Had the whole thing up in about 15 minutes. Will provide update on the performance of the tent after we use it in August 2009 at Fish Creek Pond. Overall I can say it looks very well constructed, and should stand up to rain and wind quite well. Note this is a canvas tent. You must dry it completely before storing it, or it will mildew, and the canvas will dry rot. Comes with awning. As for sleeping 8, sure, if everyone lies on the ground next to each other. Realistically, the 14 by 10 would hold 3 Cabelas's XL cots in a U shape...one on each end and one across the back wall. Lastly, this tent has a great storage cover. The easiest roll-up and storage cover I've ever done...quite an ingenious design. Separate bag for tent. This is a heavy tent....heavy canvas, and heavy duty steel poles, and heavy duty steaks."

By OutDoorsGuy71 from Mount Laurel, NJ

"This is simply the best 4 season tent made today and a bargain considering most nylon tents with similar specifications are not much less ( OR MORE ! ).

Setting up the 10 x 14 is easy. I like the fact that there are no guy lines to trip over around the perimeter of the tent (Only 2 guy lines for the awning ). I haven't had any problems with rain, morning dampness, or feeling stuffy on warm days.

Everything about this tent is quality!
