Good bullets,August 27, 2009
By krhouse
"These bullets are very accurate in my New England .223. I have yet to see any "grenade" action on groundhogs, but every hit has been an instant kill. Maybe a max load would create more damage, but a mid range charge hits every time."

Very Safe,August 24, 2009
By Troutmasterbfrom Southern Michigan
"I load these from my .243 and they shoot great. Best of all, they DISINIGRATE when they hit something, no richocets. I use them for varmits and pest control around the farm with no fear of bouncing a bullet into something important."

I really wanted these to work,June 6, 2009
By lovesthelongshotfrom Northern NV
"I cannot get these bullets to group in my Remington SPS 204. The grouping is always eratic, best is around 2 inches at 100 yds. It drives me nuts; the first two will be stacked, then the final 3 shots will be all over the target! I have tried mulitiple powder/primer combos and bullet seating depth doesn't seem to have any effect. The twist is the same as recomended on the web site. On a side note, I am having the same results with the 32 grain vmax. (almost identical) But the heavier grain bullets in this rifle will stack 5 shots on top of one another. I read another review that suggested the barnes bullets are not uniform in weight. I will have to check that at my next reload session. Bottom line is, if your gun won't digest light bullets, stay away from these."

Not to hot,May 30, 2009
By MrJoshua101
"Shot in 3 22-250s tonight. 5 rounds in each gun, and five different loads with 4064 varget and 4350. We just shoot at 4"-8" rocks on a hill 295 yards away and when you hit them you can for sure hear them. Didn't hit one rock. Shot 500 yards and dust was flying 10ish feet away from target. I know my howa has a 1:14 twist, don't know what the model 11 and model 12 savages have for a twist. But the two savages kept having the shells get stuck in the chamber and some primers exploded. Bad deal for us."

Groundhog annihilation.,May 25, 2009
By MineralCityHillbillyfrom Mineral, VA
"Excellent grouping, even at 200+ yds. One shot, one kill, what more could a varmint hunter ask for?
Loaded in a Savage 12FV w/ 1 in 9" twist, .223 cal., 29.1 grains H335 powder. Amazing knockdown power on groundhogs."

horrible accuracy with Varmint Grenades,May 22, 2009
By NorCalToddfrom Northern California
"Forced to go lead free for an upcoming shoot in California I have tried the 36 and 50gr Varmint Grenades with very poor results. So far I have played with the recommended overall lengths and three powders (including those recommended by Barnes) and the best results seen so far are running about 2"@100yards. Conventional bullets like the Vmax run at 1/2"@100 with a variety of different powders. What is maddening is having three rounds in a tight 1/2" group with the remaining rounds scattered in no particular direction.
The biggest problems I see are the varied weights, anywhere from 48.2 to 50.3 out of the same box. Hand sorting them (took 16 bullets to get 5 that were +-.3gr) produced a group under 1" but I plan on taking 1000 rounds for the trip and that is time I do not have. Using the culls at the opposing ends of the weights produced 4" groups so Im sure the inconsistency is the issue.
In very limited use in the field they appear to fragment and produce damage comparible or better than a conventional varmint bullets. Not intended as a slam on Barnes and I use their TSX and TTSX for all of my big game hunting, just hoping they will provide a more consistent product in the near future or some more competition springs up to produce a better bullet."

Not for me.....,May 17, 2009
By ColoradoGrownHunter
"After reading the reviews I was looking forward to this bullet (50gr). I have a Rem BDL, heavy barrel 22-250, 1-10 barrel twist. The twist must not be enough because I can't keep them on a 8x11 sheet of paper at 100 yards. I've tried many different powders, slow through hot loads and varied the seating depths and nothing will make them do even a 8" group at 100 yards.
An interesting compatison is I've tried the same loads and variations with the Nosler Ballistic Tip Varmint 50gr and the Barnes would put only 1/2 the bullets on a 8x11 sheet of paper, and all over. Looks like I shot buckshot at the target from 100 yards. The Noslers shot no bigger groups than a quarter with all my loads with 3 of the 3 round groups I could cover with a dime.
These comparisons were back to back on the same day. I have a new box of grenades for sale and have ordered 500 more noslers.....
Also I have Barnes VLC 50 gr bullets I've had forever and they grouped just fine. I'm only having problems with the grenades....."

Best Varmint Bullet,March 2, 2009
By Laite319from Devils Lake, ND
"I am shooting the 36gr VGs out of my 26" 1-14 twist Rem 700VLSS. These bullets are not only very accurate, but kill quickly. They are not very fur friendly on the smaller animals. I am pushing this load at about 4150fps and getting 5 shots into a dime sized hole at 100yds. 300yds is the farthest I have shot and they have kept accuracy very well. Overall these are excellent bullets."

ground hogs beware,January 27, 2009
By Bomarc7from WILLOW GROVE,PA
"I HAD A CHANCE TO RELOAD SOME LAST SUMMER.VERY ACCURATE AND DEADLY ON GROUND HOGS.BULLETT ENTERED THE CHEST CAVITY BUT NO EXIT HOLE.THE CHUCK NEVER KNEW WHAT HIT HIM NEVER MOVED DROPED WHERE HE WAS SITTING.THE SHOT WAS ABOUT 150 YARDS OUT.LIKE TO HAVE SHOT ONE AT A LONGER DISTANCE BUT THAT WAS THE ONLY CHUCK WE SAW .WE OPENED THE CHUCK UP AND FOUND EVERTHING TOTALY DESTROYED IN THE CHEST.GREAT BULLET"
"I had used the 22 caliber Varmint Grenades on a previous trip out west to dog towns. They performed very well. The latest 62 grain, 6mm caliber bullets may perform even better. Not loaded to even max numbers, they performed as well if not better than the match bullet loads I made up for this trip. Set for a 200 yard zero, I had little if any holdover out to 400. They bucked the wind well, and naturally had devasting results on impact. Until I find a bullet that shows me significantly more accuracy, I see no reason to shoot anything else."

Barnes Varmint Grenades,September 22, 2008
By Ex101erfrom Northern Colorado
"The Barnes Varmint Grenades are destructive and accurate at 100 meters provided your rifle has an adequate twist rate to stabilize them. That requires a 1:9 twist for the 36 gr VG in the .223 Rem and a 1:8 for the 50 gr VG. The 6mm 62 gr VG would also benefit from a 1:8 twist. Loading 0.010" off the rifling has produced the best accuracy so far."

WOW I'll say it again WOW,September 10, 2008
By HappyHandloaderfrom Texas
"This is one of the few products that has given me everything it claimed and more. I use it in a 222 rem and it defiantly dispatches varmits. If you use it like the reloading manual says as far as suggested powder and twist rates it is unmatched. Nosler and Hornady need to take note of this round. This is the dominate round for small game."

36 gr VG for 22-250,July 29, 2008
By wrldhunterfrom Colorado
"I've had mixed results with the 36 grain Varmint Grenade in the .22-250 caliber. These bullets grouped well from a Remington Model 700 loaded with Hodgdon Varget and chronographed 4123 fps at the muzzle. Shot well in around 45 degrees down to below 0, cold bore or after several shots. Tested these bullets extensively on jack rabbits and foxes. Most of the time these bullets performed as advertised, left a small entrance hole, no exit, with extensive internal injury from about 50 yards out to 200 yards. About 1 out of 4 shots would abesolutely annihilate whatever it hit. Had a couple foxes that probably weren't worth skinning, jackrabbits with holes in them you could put your fist through, but these bullets did perform well on coyotes. I would not recommed these bullets for bobcats. Bullets also do not have a high bullet coeffecient so they probaly aren't the best choice for long range shooting. Will try some 50gr this year and maybe try to work on a slower load."

"Don't use the 50 grain bullets in a .22-250 Barnes recomends a 1/10 twist or faster. Thay are right! I shot them in my Savage 12BVSS 1/12 twist and got a 2 3/4'' group at 100 yds , 5 1/2" @ 200yds. The 36 grain shot 1 1/2" @100yds. This gun will consistantly put five rounds in a 1/2" group @ 100yds with Hornady V-MAX. I also feel the V-MAX was more distructive on rabbits than the Varmint Grenades."
