"I Just bought an Encore Endeavor, and that is suposedly what Shockey uses right? Well I figured I would try his powder because of all the hype he gets about being "the only person to achieve the ultimate slam". Anyways I bought the powder sticks and went to the range, to find that this powder shoots very inconsistant. I took 12 shots..I dont know why, I guess I was hoping I would see some improvement in the acuracy. After the 12 shots the best grouping I had was 6 inches..and because of the inconsistency I wasnt even able to make adjustments to the scope to get it zeroed in. Lucky for me I had a box of 777 pellets with me and after 3 shots the scope was dialed in. At 100 yards I was getting cloverleaf 3 shot groups in the bullseye. I was using the 3-9 Leupold Ultimate slam scope and the reticle really works well with my endeavor using 3 777 pellets a 250 gr hornady sst low drag sabot and winchester primer. Havent shot past 200 yards yet, but up to 200 the reticle is right on!"

This product is excellent!!!, October 21, 2009
    By pbbear4u from Reading, PA

"I admit I was a skeptic but Jim Shockey is so laid back and cool. He is right! This powder is awesome. I use the 3F as suggested by APP in my .54 Hawken. It is reliable, accurate and no lubrication is needed at all ( I shoot patched round balls). Best of all clean up is even easier than advertised. It took one wet patch and one dry patch. The residue is so soluable in water it is unreal. It took like 5-10 seconds to swab the barrel with the wet patch and all was clean!!! Drying the bore was just as simple, one patch. Just put a silicate dessicate packet in your powder flask to keep the powder dry. Other than the ease of use and clean up... it is just like black powder. Someone got it right. I use the loose powder like Jim does and the 120 gr of 3F acts just like 125gr of 2F. Remember to swab the bore with alcohol to rid the barrel of any oil before you load. Buy this it is great!!"

Hotter than other pellets & clean, October 13, 2009
    By Slobhunter from Kalamazoo, MI

"TC Encore, 300 Gr TC Shockwave, 2 pellets of Jim Shockey Gold, seated f/ bench w/ rifle on bags: 1780 fps, 1 inch high @ 50 yds with clover leaf groups. Center X @ 100yds with 1 1/2 inch groups, 2 1/2 inches low @ 160 yds with 3 inch groups. Cleaned between shots.

Very pleased with this product. Must pay attention to detail when loading due to odd wedge shape, that could be improved.

    STICKS=Worst Powder I've EVER USED., September 8, 2009
    By RYPH from Kansas

"I am not sure about the other powders but DO NOT BUY THE STICKS. I was a fool and bought a few cans of the sticks (which I CANNOT return). Some of the sticks would NOT go into the barrel without shearing off the corners....others fell right in. Very inconsistent.

Also, when I was sighting in my new scope at 25 yards.... I was amazed to see that my target was on FIRE! I went to check it out and what I found was that a large portion of unburned powder actually hit the target!

I can't believe anyone would endorse this powder. It's undeniably the world's WORST blackpowder.

Waste of time and money, August 26, 2009
    By emtkev from West Virginia

"I tried this powder at the range this morning. To start with the granules are to big and the plug the opening of the powder measuring device. After the first shot, I ran a patch down the barrel and it came out just as black as my powdex powder. It did shoot the same as the powerdex but the fighting to get it from the powder measurer to the gun did me in. I left the rest at the range along with a note stating " hope you have better luck than I did". Not to mention I paid about $10.00 more than I did for the powerdex."

whats all the fuss?, July 24, 2009
    By youngoilguy from northeast ohio

"i have been using this product for a while now. i have no complaints at all. sure some of the sticks shave off a micron of powder going down the barrel, but it has never i repeat NEVER affected my accuracy or ignition. i have shot approximately 200-250 rounds with this powder and have never had a misfire. i use the remington kleenbore primers. two sticks and im on target. cleanup IS as simple as using water, with the triple se7en i had to use solvent as well."

    American Pioneer - Pellets, July 16, 2009
    By BigDogNC from Nashville, NC

"I started my muzzleloading experience with Pyrodex pellets. 5 deer kills in 5 shots in two years. I was watching the Shockey hunting show and after hearing all the claims, I purchased a bottle of the GOLD Pellets. Well, whether it was shipping, or stocking, or just being fragile, I found that I never knew what I would pull out of the bottle. I can't help but feel that broken squares of powder will have various and inconsistent power capabilities. I was very disappointed. I couldn't really tell any difference in the smoke or the cleaning. I believe I will stick to the Pyrodex Pellets, they are consistent in form, packaged smartly, and don't break in the bottle."

    Partial Burns., June 18, 2009
    By cwubullrider from Ellensburg, WA

"I shot six shots of the stuff in stick form. Two of those shots were partial burn shots. In fact on one of those partial burn shots the second pellet didn't ignite until it was 50yds out. Which was pretty cool to see but if it had been a nice buck or bull elk instead of a target I would have been mad.

As for the loose grain stuff it works okay but my groups are not as consistent as with Pyrodex Pellets.

    Jim Shockey's Fool's Gold, May 6, 2009
    By MonolithicSolid from Oklahoma

"I recently tried Jim Shockey's Gold powder in fffg configuration in my .45 caliber Kentucky Pistol. I'd been shooting Pyrodex P and when I fired the first round with Shockey's Gold, my first thought was, What happened? The thing is, the recoil was clearly half that of the Pyro P with an equal charge. This stuff is incredibly weak. It also produced a lot more smoke than the Pyrodex P, which is okay with me, because I rather enjoy a smoking gun. When I got home and cleaned my pistol, I got another surprise. I cleaned the gun as I always do with soap and water and, when I finished cleaning it and ran a dry patch down the barrel to dry it, the patch came out black. I cleaned the barrel some more. A lot more. This stuff is very hard to clean up. I've never used any propellent in a muzzle loader that was this hard to clean out of the barrel. I'll use the rest of the canister in my cannon and I'll never buy any more Jim Shockey's Gold."

Cleanup Is Not As Advertised, December 13, 2008
    By CMR54 from Minnesota

"I've used this product for three seasons, now, and I find that it is harder to get my barrels 100% clean without a lot of fuss, bother, and continuously running patches down the bore for several days after firing even one shot. I always run hot water down the bore, then clean by placing the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of hot water, and running patches into the bore with a gentle plunging action, using a special cleaning rod, with a brass muzzle protector fitting, completely filling the bore with hot water by the time I am finished. GOEX and Pyrodex leave far less residue than this stuff does, and clean up a lot easier, in my experience (38 years of shooting muzzle loaders). I use TC Bore Butter, and avoid petroleum based products. I treat my bores like fine iron skillets. Perhaps if petroleum products are used (like WD-40) cleanup isn't such a problem. But I don't like to use stinky stuff when deer are on the agenda.
As far as shot consistency goes, I use loose FFG powder and 100 grains of Shockey Gold is very equivalent to GOEX and Pyrodex in all of my rifles. But when this bottle is finished, I'm finished with Shockey Gold. It's too much bother. It forms a very hard crust that coats the bore and is very hard to clean, using natural products, in my experience.

    Great product!!, December 9, 2008
    By Indianadeerhunter33 from Peru, IN

"I have used this powder for 3 years now it is the best!! It has never misfired or had any other problems. My TC Omega Z5 prefers this over all the other powders as far as groupings are concerned. I can get 3" groups at 100 yards without problem. I would recomend everyone to at least give it a try. It is the best powder out there!"

DONT USE THE STICKS, December 3, 2008
    By Hunter68116 from Omaha, NE

"I tried this product in the stick form. Could not get a consistant pattern at 25 yds. Shot 12 times and the burn rate was different EACH TIME!! Shot placement was everywhere.

Cleaned my muzzleloader in the field, swithched back to another brand and had a center shot in 3 tries. Maybe the loose powder is better don't know. But the sticks are a waste of money!!!!!

Works for me, November 29, 2008
    By pvc49ad from Burleson, TX

"Although I have shot BP ML for a long time I haven't ever used a modern ML or any modern BP replacement powder. I got the Jim Shockey's gold based on advice from a sales person at Cabela's.

The powder works as advertised and I was able to shoot some excellent groups @ a 100 yards using 300 grain bullets and two 50 grain pellets of Gold while siting in a new rifle. Took only 15 shots total to get zeroed!

It was pretty easy to clean up as advertised. Only complaint is that it is available only in 50gr pellets. Wish it had smaller increments to adjust loads.

By bowmaster64 from Johnson City, TN.

"I can't figure out what people are complaining about. This powder is great. I have shot 1 bottle of the sticks and no misfires. Does not leave a black mess in barrel like 777 or pyrodex. If your having misfires, try another brand of primer. As for accuracy, you can't get any better."

    Jim Shockey's Gold Sticks, August 27, 2008
    By drMO from Washington, PA

"I wish I would have read the previous reviews before buying the product. I went by name recognition as most probably do. Pros--convenient and easy cleanup. Cons--very inconsisent charges-- The sizes vary. I actually had to chip the corners off a couple sticks to get them to fit down the barrel. I shoot a TC prohunter. It groups better with 777 and pyrodex. I think they (777 & pyrodex) may be better alternatives for most people."

Jim Shockeys Gold-American Pioneer Powder, June 24, 2008
    By Muzzloader from Ontario Canada

"I used this powder to hunt with this last fall 07 it sited in no problem but I noticed that the powder granulations are some what inconsistant, it does clean up well like they say and does not smell and leave bad residue the only thing different between Shockeys Gold and American Pioneer Powder is the price to have Jim Shockeys picture on the bottle I tryed both powders and got the same result. I must say the powder worked ok for me and I took my first muzzle-loader buck this last year using it a nice 225lb 8 piont Buck."
