Just receieved... But,October 23, 2009
By cliffjumperfrom Vancouver Island
"I just received my order. I bought this because the Abu C5 Mag-X in 4600-size is discontinued and I like the small round reel.
This is an initial, first-impressions review, so...
First off it seemed a bit slow, before installing line. I stripped the reel, cleaned and re-lubed. The brass centrifugal ring had a fair amount of green tarnish on the inner race, so I steel-wooled it clean.
The drag is an excellent design, being graphite fibre on both sides (2 disks) of the main gear. We'll see how it works.
There was a fair amount, not excessive, of black grease in the AR bearing (was this a used reel return, given the tarnish on the cast control?). Cleaned it up & re-greased. Oiled the bits that need oil, greased the main gear teeth, put Shimano reel grease on the apparently wet graphite drag disks, reassembled and spun things around... Much better.
Installed 14# Cajun Cast line... 0.014" dia. Standard 14# test diameter. Specs say 110 yds. Not even close... 72 yds, wound tight. That's not odd, most reel specs say one thing but real life is a great deal different. 70 yds of 14# should be fine for the purposes, but really, I was expecting 80-90 yds. I expect the "140yd of 12#" will max-out at 110 yds of .012" line (about 10# test mono). If you're planning to use braids, you'll get lots of line on this reel.
The levelwind is disengaging. and the centrifugal controls seem to be solely-adjusted with the mag-control dial.
Put it on a FEII Musky rod, cast 1/2oz & 3/8oz practise plugs for about an hour. That's a very fast-response, pretty heavy-power rod, and a hard rod to control casting light weights well.
This reel casts a ton! I had to take the 1/2oz off because I ran out of practise-distance trying to make birdnests. Even the 3/8oz was hitting 150' and no nesting. That's without my thumb touching the spool, and the control set at about 3. Again, I went over the hedge and the power lines beyond that.
On a M or MH rod, I'd guess 1/4 oz would clear 150' without nesting line. It's not a C5 which has more capacity longer handles, an engaged levelwind and a bit faster retreive, but it's easy to maintain, compact, looks good and is easy to cast, adjust and handle.
Never got one over-run/birdnest, and I am really looking forward to getting this rig wet & see if I can lure-in a couple Chum.
After a couple month's use, it might break-in to the point I need to boost the control dial or add some thumb, but if that occurs, distance will be further yet. I'm impressed.
It's well worth buying.
Cheers!"

Nice reel,June 29, 2009
By Dkrackfrom Kirkwood, Missouri
"I just bought this baitcaster to use for Musky fishing, Overall the reel is silky smooth and will cast a 1/2 oz lure a country mile on my 8' heavy action Musky rod that is rated for a lure weight of 1.5-6 oz, Right out of the box the reel is a dream, No backlash, easy adjustments to accomdate lure weight etc....I have smaller hands so this had a better feel versus an ABU record or Shimano Calcutta, My only concern is the smallish spool and access to it might be a bear if you have to clear out a birdsnest. Im considering a Pflueger Trion but will have to wait for my store to stock them,"

Smothest reel ever,May 27, 2009
By Bassmaster709
"I got this reel but first I had to decide between a Prodigy or a Pflueger Trion.I took them both out of the boxes and I started reeling the Prodigy first and it was the smothest reel I have ever reeled it fit comfortable into my hand and the Pflueger was to big and clunky.
P.S. It is a great reel to srart out with for muskies or northerns."

Smooth reel....,June 10, 2008
By MrMarshallfrom North Liberty, IA
"This is my 2nd attempt at fishing with a baitcasting reel. After reading reviews in outdoor magazines I picked one of these up and have been pleased with it. Casts well, easy adjustments and the anti-backlash seems to work good as well."

Cabelas Prodigy Round Baitcast Reel,February 25, 2008
By Bumofrom Balsam Lake, Wisconsin
"This is quite a reel. Amazing quality and inovative design and use of strong materials where it counts. I have not fished it yet but practice casts are excellant. Nice low profile and compact for a round reel. Sweet outer brake adjuster. A rare strong compact breed that will perform as good as it looks.
I bought two and may buy more. I highly recomend this reel !"
