Handles San Diego's Tuna Very Well!!!,
September 27, 2009
By AlanSD

"This reel performed better than expected against 20 to 30 pound Yellowfin Tuna. I matched my SSBF 65 with a Salt Striker rod (#20-#40) spooled with #50 Ripcord SI+ and combo held up as well as the conventional combos with the added advantage of castability.
The baitfeeder has a little more resistance than I would like, but manually stripping the line worked fine. Could have used more line capacity on a couple of the larger fish. Overall, the best spinning combo for Southern California Offshore Fishing for the $$$."

Nice Reel!!,

By AJOlbring

"Ocean Kayak fishermen should have this reel since it can be used as a spinning reel or also function somewhat like a levelwind, since I don't want to carry lots of gear on my kayak. Use it first for catching bait fish and then the baitfeeder option for adjusting depth while drifting the bait for halibut etc.. Both drags are very precise adjustable in a heartbeat, it will be my #1 reel (on a Uglystick Tiger) when I am kayak fishing."

"when i first got this reel, looked good and was impressed. after fishing it about 4 times i am gonna call cabelas and try to return it. to put it honestly its junk! plastic frame will not handle strong fighting fish and twists like no reel i have ever fished. i spend a lot of time on the water and this is one of the worst quality reels i have ever used. buy the okuma or dawia instead, what little price difference there is worth the upgrade"

Fishing takes more than expensive gear,
May 19, 2009

"While lacking in experience in the use of a large spinning reel, I have fished often with a smaller spinning reel than the Cabela's Salt Striker Bailtfeeder Spinning Reel Model SSBF-80 I do not want to criticize the reel, I did have a bad experience trying to cast with the reel while surf fishing at Edisto Island Beach, SC. The line got tangled up every time I tried to cast. Again, I admit I had never used a spinning reel as large as the SSBF-80, but I have been fishing for over sixty years, and I have never had this kind of problem before. I was fishing with a friend who has a lot of salt water fishing experience using large reels, he had the same problem as I did when he attempted to cast with my reel."

"I purchased and shipped reel to Florida to enjoy some surf fishing. Before I even used it for the first time, the rod seat broke in half. While it's proported to be made of aluminum, it appears to be plastic.
I wouldn't purchase or recommend."

flimsey frame,

"I recieved the 40 size reel with great expectations after reading positive reviews. When i opened the box it looked great, the finish was very nice and it was very smooth, that was the end of what i thought was good. The Graphite frame was so thin and week that when I tryed to spool it up it actually torked so much in each direction i thought it would break in my hand. This with just a little pressure to spool the line. This reel needs to be made out of aluminum. The Graphite is just to flimsy."

Second buy on a second bait spin reel,

"I have some great very compact travel rods made in Norway and wanted to pair the 7' and 9'10" heavy action spinning rods with worthy reels. I regularly travel to Aruba, Spain as well as Florida and wanted reels to bait fish with. I loaded these with your braided lines to optimize line quanity with 30# and 50# tensile strength.I will be casting thread herring in May for silver king with my new fishing buddies. Great action on the machining and 10 bearings. '"

SSBF80,
January 24, 2009
By docfish
from Long Island, NY
|
"I bought this reel last year and paired it with SS 6'6" 20-40 lbs spinning rod. The reel is so smooth and strong. Ive landed big blues and a couple of big stipers with this reel and unlike the SS80 (which produces a grinding after 3 trips) this reel is yet to let me down. I would recommend others to buy this reel."

A great reel at a fantastic price.,

"This is the second "Cabela's Salt Striker" I have purchased. As with the first unit, the performance is very polished. I live in Australia in Victoria and fish mainly in Port Philip Bay and in around some of the close inshore reefs. At this time of year (Oct to Dec) we target mainly "Snapper". These masterly beasts (usually in the 4 - 12lb mark with the occasional model upwards of 18 -20lb require finesse at times to overcome there sometimes finicky bite -this is were the Salt Striker comes into its own. The drag is smooth and consistent, both in the first setting and strike setting. Snapper are a very aggresive fighting fish and quality tackle is what is required -these reels provide it in bucket loads. I would like to thank Cabelas for their professional and prompt service they provide, considering we are on the far side of the Pacific the packages usually turn up within the 7 -10 days after the order is placed. Even with the weakening Australian Dollar against the Greenback it is still cheaper than buying equivalent "imported" products from the available tackle outlets here!!!!!"
