Cabela's XML Spinning Rods

Our XML Rods incorporate superior components in order to deliver the exceptional performance that has made them legendary. The ceramic Alconite? rings and tips used in the Fuji Concept Guide System are 80% stronger and 20% lighter than traditional aluminum oxide. The new downlocking fore grips eliminate exposed threads for greater comfort. Each rod is equipped with a weight-balancing system butt cap (weights sold separately). You can custom-weight each rod for the perfect balance with any size reel. These spinning models come with Fuji graphite reel seats. Portuguese cork grips complete the package.

Reel seat broke at very bad time, November 9, 2009

"Lost a big Musky when the reel seat broke on the Med Heavy rod (XCLS705-1A). I'm glad Cabelas is so good about taking things back...but I wish I could have that fish back on."

"I have been using the 9' and 10' for the past three years catching salmon in Alaska. I have caught over 100 salmon on the rods and they have worked outstanding. I took the rods rock fishing in saltwater. Biggest saltwater fish was a halibut just under #100 caught while rock fishing. The rod has a ton of spine. The only problem is the seat on the new rods. Cabels's needs to change this design and the rod would equal the best on the market."

"used the rod for a season and a half before this review. if you like backbone, you are going to get it. my favorite rod to date. awesome backbone, good sensitivity, nice guides. reel seat can take a little improvement (back end cork will seperate a tad if you screw the reel down too tight). but the rest of the rod makes up for it. it's warranted so you can't lose. great rod"

"I really like these rods. they are light even with the balance weights. they have enough backbone to handle large lakers and even a 20# pike. they are sensitive and work great for walleye and smaller fish. purchased a couple for the kids last Christmas and liked them so well I upgraded to them myself.
the fact I found a few on sale made it all the better. I used two of these on a fall Canadian fishing trip and found myself picking up these over any other rod I took. the only thing I would like to see is 6' to 6'6" MH. in the handle I liked."

"I broke this rod in on schooling sandbass on Lake Lewisville. I was completely satisfied with it's performance. I was "catching" and not "fishing" for over an hour. The rod's light action made the trip even more enjoyable. I believe my fishing partner was jealous of the fun I was having at the rear of the boat with my new toy."

"The Cabela's XML Series spinning rods are top quality in every way. My recently purchased XML is the second one that I've added to my rod locker. I've tested more expensive "high-end" big name rods and none have the sensitivity, action, quality construction, and value that the XML rods have. In my opinion there are no better rods for the money!

I have used my XML rods in both on-shore saltwater trips as well as fresh water fishing near home. My primary target species is walleye, but this series of rods has a variety of weights and actions to accomodate fishing for nearly any species. I use the rods for vertical jigging, crankbait trolling, and cast-and-retrieve fishing with various baits.

I LOVE MY XML RODS!"

"I have had a cabelas xml 6' ultralite for about a month now and it has fastly became the best rod ive ever owned. I use it for almost anything, because big fish are extremely fun bringing in on an ultralite rod. Very sensitive and very strong. I also just purchased an cabelas mag touch medium light. Cant wait to use it also. Great job cabelas!"

"The Cabelas XML Spinning Rod was a great addition to my collection of good rods. I used the rod for trout fishing and it worked excellent. The only minor draw back is I think it is a little stiff. You may consider the ultralight for trout of smaller sizes 20 inches and less. Great price as well I caught this one on sale."

"I purchased the 6ft 9inch med action spinning rod. I am very pleased with the feel and action of this rod. I was replacing a 7ft rod that was old and to my surprize the 6ft 9 rod was approx the same size with just a shorter handle."

"i just back from canada , and caught a lot fish three guys in the boat and we all had cabelas xml spinning rods . i have fish with boron rod, graphite rods this rod has more feel then any i have had. an for soft bitting walleyes is sure was the ticket"

"This is an excellent rod. I already had two, one I built from a blank and another I bought as a rod. I bought this third (all identical) simply because it was on sale and I couldn't resist having another.

This is a great all around spinning rod. I have personally caught trout from 6" to 7 lbs and this rod has plenty of backbone for large fish and yet has a very light feel. With a high quality reel it will cast very light lures a country mile. I highly recommend it!"

"DURING A TUFF BITE ON WALLEYE AND FISHING PRESSURE WHERE I LIVE ITS JUST A SLIGHT PRESSURE BITE AND WITH THESE NEW XLM RODS I FEEL IT MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE THE VERY FIRST TIME I FISHED THE NEW RODS. Great rod that works well, July 24, 2009

"I went on a trip to Norhtern Manitoba and needed a medium heavy rod for pike. This rod worked well and I was very pleased.

The only problem I have with the rod is the reel seat design. I had to send my first rod back since the cork on the reel seat split and separated, as usual, Cabela's replaced it without issue. The second seat was fine and no problems arose.

I have found that Cabela's rods are great value for the price. I just wish they had a better reel seat design."

"This rod and the reel seat do not match. The reel seat is real cheezy. It was not well though out. I have many fresh water reels. The only reels that would fit the rod are my ultralights rated 2-4lb test. The rod is rated for line of 6-12 Equavalent reels would not fit the seat. The seat is too small I had to use a screw driver to shove open the seat so my real rated 6-10 would fit the real. This damages the real seat that is weak already. The rod itself feels and performs fine. Just good luck finding a reel that will fit it."

"I bought 3 XML rods, 2 ultalight and 1 med weight spinning. The purchase was prompted because I bought an UL XML a few years back that I totally loved, and it was broken during recent air travel. I wound up getting 3 rods because they were 50% off. ( and free shipping!)

The replacement UL rods are not as fine as the earlier version I tried to replace -- they are heavier and a bit less sensitive. Also, one of the decorate butt caps fell off during shipping (glue bond failed).

That said, at 1/2 price I am totally satisfied. At full price I would look hard at the St Croix Avid series as a preferred alternative."

"I have lost count of the number of times that I have had to drive to Cabelas to return my XML rod. The tips are constantly breaking off. These are not abused rods either. I have broken these all while having fish on. very dissapointed and am hoping to get store credit to buy a St Croix."
