"I bought this reel when i was putting together a "budget" combo to use strictly for striper and cat fishing in the Delaware river. Right when i took it out of the box i knew it was a great reel just by how heavy it was. The gears in this thing are very strong and smooth. I spooled it with 30lb. power pro and put it on my 10' Daiwa Sealine. This reel has taken some SERIOUS abuse and came out on top every time. After owning it for a few months i decided to start using it in the surf and on the first trip a wave washed up my spike and there when my rod and reel. After my reel took a swim for about 10 minutes (friend snagged it for me) I got it back to see it loaded with sand and salt water. It was already locked up and i thought it was toast. After striping it apart and soaking it in hot water and re greasing it it is still as smooth as ever although it has acquired a slight whining sound but it has not affected the performance of the reel at all. To this day this is my primary reel and my more expensive reels are now by backups. So, do yourself a favor and purchase this reel. You will not find a better reel for the money because there is not one that can mach the Sargus yet. Great job PENN!!"

"I bought the sargus 5000 coupled with power pro 30lb test braid and put it on my 7' TICA tc2, medium/heavy, fast action rod. Couldnt be any happier. I like the all metal construction. I also like that there is no reverse switch, as they are useless anyhow and its just one less thing that can break. People complain about the weight of the reel but honestly in my opinion it helps to balance my entire outfit and I just dont find it to be as heavy as people claim it is. Great reel, tough as they come. Good in surf, rivers, flats, off-shore, and off the rocks. This thing is a striper machine and all my buddys are jealous. Best reel ive ever owned!"

"this is a great new reel. a 5 star reel if it was a bit lighter. i have the 5000 w/ 30# power pro on a 9' stellar lite. this reel is an absolute workhorse. bought this reel for "long-lining" bucktails (3/4 oz to 3 oz with any size weight attached up the line on a 3-way) in deep, x-fast flowing water from the jetty or along the canal of indian river inlet, DE. it casts a country mile and has a nice smooth, fast retrieve. here you gotta tighten the drag all the down, jam the hook, and "tow" em in aganist the current before they get you down in the rocks and break you off, and this is almost the perfect reel for the job. hopefully they come out with a lighter version in the near future. gets a bit heavy after a few hours of long-linin with up to 6 ozs of weight on the line. the stratic it replaced was perfect, but i couldnt afford the new FI and the penn rep at the fishin tent sold me on the sargus. pleased, but doesnt touch the stratic for sure."

"I bought my first Penn Sargus 2 years ago when they first hit the seen, I have since replaced all my spinning reels with them. I now own 6 in the 2000 size and 2 in the 3000 size. Easily the best reel for the money on the market. Unlike like most modern reels this one feels rock solid and is extremely durable. After 2 years my first reel still looks and feels like my newest one and with well over 150 days on the water each of the last two years, they have been put to the test. The 2000 size reel is the fastest/smallest reel on the market with a 6.2 to 1 gear ratio for a pretty compact reel. They are slightly heavier then other reels but that’s to be expected with an all metal casing. Smooth and very precise drag, rock solid bail and quite frankly a very sleek yet tough look to this reels makes it one of the best decisions a person could make. I just hope they don’t go on back order soon as I still might need one or two more. I do wish they came with an extra spool."

"I recently purchased a Sargus 6000 to replace my Penn Captiva. I was very dissapointed with the Captiva and it's soft graphite body, and needed a change. The Sargus 6000 filled all my expectations of what a Penn reel should be. I've caught many large "gator" bluefish up to 15lbs on this reel. The frame is rock solid aluminum alloy and the drag works very well, even on large fish. I'm taking it tomorrow offshore to cast to mahi'mahi's in the 5-20lb range (hopefully!) Regardless, this is a great reel for an excellent price. You really get what you pay for, and then some. It's an excellent reel and definitely worth getting, and I look foward to using it for Stripers in the fall."

"I have just purchased this reel. I saw it at a show and fell in love with the solid workmanship. You definately get what you paid for with Penn reels. I have 3 Penn reels now (4 with the Sargus). One of them (the 430SS), my wife purchased for me 15 years ago. It has been the main workhorse for all of my fishing outings and has never let me down. Always smooth and well balanced (made from metal as well). I also have the larger and ultralight Penns in the same series. I use the larger one for my Pike and Musky fishing and the Ultralight for Small Mouth Bass. They are all outstanding which is why I am sold on Penn. The best part...they are all built on a simple platform with few bells and whistles, a simple front end drag system and it works! Get one. You will definately have made a solid investment!"
