"This is a great pole and reel combo. Great Price for the quality. The only thing I would reconsider is using a lighter weight line. I chose the 9, Even though work quite well and satisfied, when the rod and reel are rated for 7/8/9. Considering buying similar reels with different weight lines for a variety. Still A good pole and intend to use it for a while and return to Cabelas for any other fly products I may need."

"I wanted to get back in to fly fishing for panfish & an occasional trout. I didn't want to spend too much due to the fact that I had spent alot once upon a time and decided it was too much trouble and gave my gear to my son.
The outfit seems to be of good quality and so far has worked well in my front yard. I will have a chance to use it soon on some real bluegills and I'm hoping it will work as well on the water. My son has gotten to be somewhat of a good fly fisherman, since he has some really good equipment. Despite this fact, my son also purchased the same combo as I and he says it was well worth the cost and then some.
Thanks, Cabela's, for allowing me to, once again, delude myself into thinking I might become a fly fisherman, but at a much reduced cost. If I get really good at it, I will come back to buy some more gear."

"I bought this rod and reel for my grandson as an introduction to flyfishing. It is not the same quality as my Orvis or Sage rods or my Ross reels, but it is ideal for a beginning flycaster. I am very happy with the purchase. I selected the 5 wt. 8 and 1/2 foot rod. My grandson, a third grader, had no trouble learning the basics of flycasting. He had a great deal of fun on a local pond with "his" rod and reel."

"I bought this rod as a newbie with the intention of using it when I back pack and four wheeler around here in Alaska. It is compact and seems to work well with catching lake trout and grayling. Would definitely recommend to a beginner as to not waist your money. the rod is easy to control and fun to use. another wonderful product I have purchased thru cabelas. I have used it in lakes and small streams with no troubles. quality seems good. I don't even have a case for it it just rolls around in my truck and I strap it to the wheeler. Probably luck in that aspect. Good luck and happy fishing."

"I had been away from the fly fishing for some time and wanted a new inexpensive rod. This fit the bill perfectly. Itpacks down to store in the truck and doesn't feel like a cheap rod. I was able to shake off the rust in no time with it. It may not be the best line but fine until you get to replace it. I never hooked anything big enough to fight off the reel yet but the drag seems to have a nice feel. Nicer than a "cheap" rod, but cheaper than a real nice rod."

The most dangerously addictive of fishing combos,June 13, 2009

"If you are thinking about trying fly fishing DO NOT BUY THIS COMBO. YOU WILL BECOME ADDICTED.
I ordered mine on the recommendation of a seasoned fly fisher. The 8wt combo was my choice based on the package directions on betts poppers I already had, and my penchant for carp.
Before I could even do a proper four part or roll cast, I was catching bluegills, bass, chain pickerel. I destroyed the leader ( and a few flies) by trying to teach myself to cast, by the time I did some reading it was getting pretty short, but it still caught fish.
Now I am waiting for more leaders and a loop attachment. I have the shakes, and can't stop thinking about getting back out there. My spinning and casting rods no longer give me the same thrill.
There are other combos out there, but for an all around value in 8wt, this one is hard to beat. I will and have recommend this to anyone who wants to test the waters with a fly rod - with a warning that it won't be long until they are contemplating upgrades.
Would rather have an old school reel like the pfluger 1094, 1492 or similar sized for 8wt, BUT the graphite reel has a nice drag adjustment and does fine as a line holder or even fighting pickerel and bass ( all mine have been under four pounds so far)
I am already looking to upgrade the reel for carp with line and backing as well. I will keep this reel in situ for a back up and lesser specimen fishing.
The four piece rod is very easy to transport, the guides are large enough that most flies and small poppers can be left tied on and fed through so you can remove the reel without cutting your leader after every outing.
As delivered, with a spool of tippet and any reasonable standard of care, it should last a good season of panfish and bass. WARNING - THIS COMBO IS JUST THE BEGINNING!!! I AM HAPPILY ADDICTED TO FLY FISHING.
Don't be like me, read some articles or books on basic casting and practice some before tying on a fly. Your leader will thank you."
