Delorme Earthmate 40,October 29, 2009
By mikel1999from Virginia
"I really had high hopes for the PN-40, but instead I am returing it. The basic software is good, but not great. The basic memory of the gps along with the 1GB memory card included with the gps will only give you about two states so after you download the area you want the problems begin. When you zoom in on an area everything as far as the graphs of an area just disappears. So unless you like looking at everything from atleast a .25 mile away or don't like knowing the terain in front of you this is not the gps for you. Delorme is nice enough to give you $40 worth of downloads for ariel photos at the cost of $1 per grid for color ariel or .05 cents for black and white satelite photos and yes there are other options in between the two but when you download them you really cant zoom in on them so it doesn't help those of us who have to hunt in the thick brush. Also If you hunt near a restricted ariel area you can buy the ariel photos from delorme and view them on your computer but cant download onto the GPS.??? Now I do understand we don't need to be allowing photo satelite or aierl imagery of military instillations but why allow for someone to buy them to begin with???"

DeLorme Earthmate® PN-40 GPS,September 14, 2009

"This is one of a few items I bought from Cabela's before I went on a back country elk hunt in the Western Wilderness area of CO. It was great. I really like the map packages that come with the unit. Topo USA works well from my home PC and allowed me to look at areas in detail and then transfer the info to my GPS before the trip. In my opinion you really get a lot for your money with the PN-40."

No Practical Purpose,July 5, 2009
By Jarhed1984from Miami, Fl
"I fish a lot in the bays and canals around Miami. I spend a lot of time on Google Earth planning my next outing. I can clearly see grass beds and flats from the Satellite. So when I saw this put your GPS position on a Sat Photo I was in. Well, the software was awful. I'm a pretty tech savy guy but it took me 3 nights to get the first maps on the thing. You have to load each area individually (city blocks) FOR EACH TYPE of map you want. When its all done at the end of the day you have a display just a little bigger than the average mans thumb. Face it, there is no practical application for this product. You can't drive a boat or ride a bike and see anything. There is no reason to buy a PN40 cause the screen is the same as a PN 20. Spend a little more and buy a Garmin."

Delorme PN-40,June 17, 2009
By MaineHunter57from Maine
"Hands down the best GPS I have ever used. The ability to use aerial "hybrid" maps that have contour lines and land features is incredible. Hunting is my life, but when I am not hunting, I simply snap the GPS into my RAM mount for my car and use it as a navigator. There are a thousand different applications for this unit. Plus its completely waterproof! It took me less than an hour to figure out how to use it, so I give it 5 stars also for ease of use. The reason this GPS system is above the rest is you recieve TOPO USA with your purchase. This allows you to pre-plan any hunting, fishing, or cross country driving trip you can think of. For a mere 30 bucks a year, Delorme offers a unlimited map library subscription that allows you to download aerial imagery, nautical charts, and other types of maps. When it comes down to it, you just cant find a better GPS!!"

awesome!!!,April 30, 2009
By mandofrom Newton, Ma
"Cant say enough good things about this unit. The online customer support and forums are great for problem solving and firmware updates. The pn 40's satelite aqusition/holding ability are unreal, even under heavy tree cover. I feel this is the only unit that paralells garmin's 60csx in terms of satelite rception. The aerial photos are excellent tools for hunting/scouting, as well as hiking in mountainous area's. Although the screen is a bit on the smaller side, the pn makes up for it in pixel clarity (both in direct sunlight and shade). The unit is rugged, and is excellent on battery consumption ( 2 AA's). Best handheld on the market by far...on all front's!!!"

New Delorme PN-40 GPS,January 11, 2009
By randycwfrom La Prele Wyoming
"I have had this Delorme PN-40 for just over 30 days and have had it in the field with me to hunt, make brass caps and mark fences. I used legal descriptions and the TOPO 7 software to put in our ranch property boundaries. I have then used the track feature on the PN-40 to begin mapping the fences: which I add as a draw layer on the TOPO 7 software. I have also downloaded hi-res aerial images from Delorme's site and put them on the PN-40. The two together (PN-40 and the TOPO 7) are like having GoogleEarth on a handheld GPS. I love it.
The unit acquires satellites very fast: FAR faster than my old Garmin eTrex. The screen is small but the resolution is very nice, and in my opinion well overcomes the smallish screen.
Battery life is a bit short at around 4 hours. However that is with all the bells and whistles running. So perhaps others might get better time on their batteries. I just carry a few extra AAs in my pocket."
