Drag fails Locks,

"Thought this was a decent reel for price--
Went king salmon fishing in Michigan drag locks randomly. I lost 9 or 10 fish until I got tired of messing with reel trying to adjust drag. Switched to a decent reel and landed 20 or more fish no problem. Not happy with this product. I will return it. If you are going to fish for big boys, I would reccomend you step up to a name brand reel with a cork drag system. I was very frustrated breaking off all those big fish because I had this inferior reel in my hand!"

"I really wanted an extra spool for my XSS #2 reel. For some unknown reason Cabelas only carriers spools for #1 and #3. So I had to purchase another #1 reel.
Seems to me there is a hole in their marketing approach."

"This is a quality reel, the only issue I have is that the listing of the capacity of backing and fly line is not accurate with regards to Spey Line. Spey line is much larger than traditional fly line and this should be taken into consideration when purchasing these reels. If you intend on using this reel in a Spey fishing manor, do yourself a favor and buy the largest reel. Then all the Spey line will fit."

Worthless Drag,

"I bought the model 1 for steelhead fishing in Oregon. My first impression of the reel was that everything about it was great. It performed really well the first few times I used it, but as soon as the weather got cold, the drag failed. I'm not sure if it was because of freezing temps, but the last few times I used it, it was 30 to 40 degrees out, and the drag would free spool when I would rip line off of it. Never happened with a fish on, but then again I didn't catch many with it because I was constantly untangling my line off the reel. I'm exchanging it for a different brand."

BUT FOR THE SCREW,

"I took th reel bonefishing and loved it. I also have used it for steelhead and some lunker largemouth bass in my secret location.
My only complaint is I dropped it and the little screw stripped out that holds the reel itself onto the seating that you attach to your rod. I HOPE that was a fluke but Cabelas stood behind it and replaced it."

Rugged and reliable,

"Fished for a week straight in salt water. Not as good as I should have been in rinsing the equipment off at the end of the day, but the reel was flawless. Stood up well to repeated dunks in salt water as well as a couple of heavy fish that ran hard. Best deal on the market if you ask me. Will definitely be picking up some extra spools for easier line selection."

"I have two of these reels and I like the light weightness of the reel and the feel. However the two small screws that hold the reel seat to the reel body are two small and weak. It came apart on me while I was in Christmas Island with no way of fixing it. You need to make it with four screws or though bolt it. Needs a better more secure design here. I am sending it back and asking Cabelas to send me another one. Hopefully this won't happen again."

"i have the reel only a couple of months and the reel foot fell off
the screws were to shortand the holes stripped out
i only cauhgt a couple of steelhead with this reel and never abused it
the reel grinds when you have a fish on and the drag goes out
i will be saving my money for a better reel from a different company"

"My 1st xss reel had the handle fall off on a fishing trip out of the country. I managed to repair it when I got home, then the drag seized. Cabelas sent a replacement reel, this time I was not even able to load fly line backing onto the reel because the spool rubbbed against the frame. I will be buying a more expensive name brand reel to replace this."
