You need practice,
August 3, 2009
By MTCreel
from Gayling, MI

"At first I could not make it work, especially on smaller flys. But some practice has helped, and am now able to make it work most of the time. It will be a lifesaver next year in the middle of the night for big hex flys."

Magnetic Threader,
May 27, 2009
By Waylan
from California
|
"I did not find the magnetic holder/threader at all useful when threading #20 to #24 flies. The tippet would not thread the eye any better than doing it normally. It may be fine on larger flies, but was useless on the tiny midges used on the San Juan River in NM."

"while skeptical when purchased I now believe this to be a good investment. Found to work quite well with 4 to 7 X leaders and flys from 22 to big. If you have those 50 something eye's give this a try, it works for me."

Magnetic Fly Treader,
January 20, 2009
By HalKv
from San Diego, Ca.

"Fly fishing is a delicate sport. As you age two of the first things to be diminished is a steady hand and retreating vision. Placing the fly in the magnetic slot allows you to get a steady grip on the tool. The fly is now secure and the tool is braced between your thumb and forefinger. Threading the tippet into the magnetic slot can be assisted by pressing the treading hand firmly against the already braced tool, The treading hand is quickly relieved as the tippit moves accuratly into the eye of the hook. A fantastic tool for all but, a lifestyle saver for those of us who treasure our independence on stream or lake as we age."

Magnetic tyer,

"I like many had reached the age where my arms are either too short or too long. However this little gadget has been a great boon to my time spent on the river. I have used the smallest midges (size 28) and the lightest tippett (8X) and have had no difficulty in threading the flies. I have had a bit of difficulty with heavy hackled flies, but still better than trying to hold the fly up toward the sun to illuminate both the eye and the tippett material and not being blinded. Do not need the magnifiers any more. Now if we could come up with a better way to see the take of those little Brookies.

Very Useful,

"I purchases this to help with fly threading, but soon fond it great for threading a lot of other things including small jigs, spinners, and other lures. A great help for those of us over 25---WAY over 25 years old. Has magnet so keep away from things influenced magnetically-- 6-8 inches should be fine."

"I have sight in only one eye. When I was fishing the Big Hole MT area this summer, it was recommended to me by Uncle Bob's for micros. I caught a 21", 4lb Rainbow on one. I could never tie a micro before. So simple a tool - now indespensible."

"I use the fly threader in low light conditions. It has trouble getting the leader through the eye on small, heavy hackle flies. On all others it works fine. Saves a lot of blind pokes cause of these old eyes."

Don't Waste Your Money,
September 27, 2008
By ghilly18
from Central California

"I made 25 attempts to thread a #14 adams with 5x tippet. It made it through 2 times. I tried 25 more with a parachute adams and made zero. All this was at the comfort of my kitchen table with good lighting. I would not want to try this out in a stream. I have better luck with trial and error with my aged eyesight. In addition the picture shows threading through the bottom of the eye of the hook. I use knots that specifically go through the top of the eye. Spend the money instead on a good pair of reading glasses."

Magnetic fly threader,
July 7, 2008
By Fisherwithstorageneeds
from Atlanta
|
"This is not a good product. The groove doesn't direct the tippet where it needs to go; essentially, it needs a 360 degree funnel to get it there (and past hackle fibers, etc), not a groove. Might be OK if you were always dealing with hook eyes without hackle around them, or using only stiff mono."

Magnetic Fly Threader,
July 7, 2008
By Skindogs
from Stafford, VA
|
"Not as good as I hoped. If you have any material near the eye of a small hook it defeats the intent of the threader by diverting your tippet away from the eye. It works well on larger hooks, but those aren't the ones I need the help with."

Hook Threader,
May 5, 2008
By RogerW
from Saskatchewan, Canada
|
"I'm 61 and even with magnifying glasses it's tough to thread small flies and hooks. The gizmo works like nothing I've seen before. I can't imagine going fly fishing without it anymore. I'm getting joy out of fishing #20 choronomids. Before I just got too frustrated tying small flies on that I know I missed the 'right fly' because I left those little ones in my fly box. Thanks Cabelas!"
