This line is Junk...,November 17, 2009
By Troutbum1957from Trout streams all over the world
"I've been a Sci Angler guy for 20 years and Orvis before that and was talked into this RIO Gold stuff. It's JUNK... I used it one day before it started to split. After reading many of the reviews here I won't be buying RIO line again... Like another reviewer said Cabelas does get 5 stars for standing by their customer service pledge..."

Great line but low durability,October 11, 2009
By Kulbojfrom Poland
"Great line, i.e. floats great, nice color, right softness, casts nice ... but its coating is prone to cuts and scratches which doesn't make the line last long. So it's a fantastic line provided you can afford to buy new lines often."

Poor Manufacturing Process = Poor Performance,October 2, 2009
By FlyfishingFoolfrom Missouri
"I purchased 2 Rio Gold lines in WF4F and WF5F this Spring. After using a few days, the outer coating of both lines cracked and split right where the end of the welded loop is connected (sealed?) back to the fly line. This allows the inner nylon line to absorb water and as a result it sinks - not what you want out of a floating fly line.
When I complained to Rio, they stated that this was a known problem in a lot of their early production runs of the Rio Gold product. When I pushed a bit, Rio agreed to replace both lines at no cost. I received the replacement WF5F line in about 2 weeks, but it took almost 6 weeks before I received the replacement WF4F line (apparently they are still having production problems with the WF4F manufacturing line). On my next week long fly fishing trip, I used both rods/lines each day, and AGAIN both lines cracked in the same place, one in 3 days of use, the other in 4 days of use. I resolved the problem by cuitting off the welded loops (and about an extra 6 inches of the WF5F where it also broke) and nailed on some Amnesia leader material with a Perfection loop on the end.
Now I have used many different fly lines in the past including Orvis, Scientific Angler and Airflo, and I have never had any line break like this in a matter of a few days. Most lines I have usd in thge past have lasted several seasons of fishing. So I do not think I abused the lines, just used them for 7-8 hours a day, mainly roll casting bead-head nymphs 30-50 feet.
It appears that Rio still has some serious problems with their manufacturing process, and the fly line coating is either too soft or simply not durable enough to stand up to even mild usage - possibly both problems are accurate! I would not recommend this fly line to anyone."

Use it for everything,October 1, 2009
By axilleus17from West Virginia
"I bought the 7 wt line for my smallmouth/carp rod and it turned out to be an excellent buy. The line comes super slick, and for the most part you really don't need to condition it that much, just wipe it down with a damp cloth and its good to go. As far as lines go its easy to cast and works well loading my fast action rod. Its also easy to turn over larger bugs like Clousers and big beadhead wooly buggers while at the same time it can gently lay down a small popper. As far a coldwater species go there probably isn't much you can't use it for, and is everything you expect from Rio."

RIO Gold,August 17, 2009
By fishhuntRfrom Colorado
"I've had this line for only 3 months. It's never really been super slick or had great shootability as advertised. The coating is very fragile and will peel or nick easily, I've never seen any fly line do this before. It's not very durable at all. It might have just been defective from the start but I'll stick to the SA Mastery Series lines. As always though this product gets only 1 star but Cabela's gets 5 stars for customer satisfaction and standing behind their sales."

Love This Fly Line,July 14, 2009
By CWhitefrom Atlanta
"Slippery is the best way to describe this line. Added significant distance to my casts and accuracy. Easy to mend too.
I have the 4 and 6 weights and have fished for both smallmouth and trout with these lines and they're great."

Taken by surprise.,May 1, 2009
By lochewefrom Scottish Highlands
"Was given this line (7wght) as a gift by a relative in USA. I fish professionally but despite this I frequently have my off days and can,t get a line out there. I was having one of those days when I decided to change lines. The difference was immediately obvious. I use a modern fast action rod and found the gold was controlable at distance and close in. It laid straight on the water showing no memory, was very easy to pick up and performed well when cast into headwinds which are always present on Scottish hill lochs. I fished standard wets and weighted nymphs without any complaint from the line. We all know casting is about the workman and not his tools but I felt this line gave me an edge on an off day so i,ll stick with it. I read one gentleman had problems with the leader loop being distorted. Mine was too but I cut it off and used a needle knot to replace it with a short length of nylon. Works fine."

An OK line....,February 12, 2009
By jpbehfrom Omaha, NE
"This line was recomended to me by a fellow fisherman as being the latest and greatest thing, I purchased the line and the line has shown some weakness: the first off being that it doesnt load as well as I had hoped, being a wf design it requires a bit of effort for me to lay out any more line than 60', the other is that the line has required a lot more maintence than my SA lines. With the Rio I have to clean it and redress it on almost every outing or its performance deminishes rather quickly."

Hooked Loop?,October 2, 2008
By troutoutfrom Plainville, Ct
"After many hours researching lines on line going Rio Gold was my choice. I got the line home loaded up a with a good satisfaction at the the feel of the line, loved the color. Then I got to the welded loop. It was offset from the line, twice the diameter and curved significantly to the right. After several failed attempts to get it to straighten out I took it off and repackaged it. So instead of fishing this morning I have to back to the store and get something new. There is no way you can cast accurate if your tip curves to the right or left. I hope that this is just a defect in the individual line I got and not the way they do it."

rio gold 5wt,July 26, 2008
By blakdoghunterfrom Lufkin, TX
"Great fly line. Good loop stability, extremely slick, and high floating... just as advertised. One of my favorite features however is the color scheme... the moss color is perfect (not too bright but still easily seen) and the color change to yellow tells you where the head of the line ends... why doesn't everyone do this. Great Fly Line Period,April 21, 2008
By wavesliderfrom Los Angeles, CA
"I have just completed the process of putting Rio Gold Line on all of my reels from 2wt through 6wt. I find it to be one of the finest fly lines I've ever used. I had to replace my trusty 5wt line and was considering just going with simple SA floating line like I always have. I never was a big believer in the "hype" around fly line. They float or they sink, what's the big deal. A friend talked me into putting the Rio Gold on my reel and I am forever grateful. This line not only casts well but the real noticable difference is in mending, line pickup and how it makes even the clumsiest of casts come out well. It seems to be accurate by weight (I'm using an older Sage "noodle" rod in 5wt and the 5wt line works well. Same with my 3 wt.
It floats well at the tip and through the body. It casts well to say the least. I took my girlfriends fast action 6wt rod and proceeded to cast the entire fly line with it. Not sure I've ever done that before. In addition to that, it will cast 10ft equally as well in tight quarters.
I've been using it for quite a while now and even used it in some iced-up snake guides and it didn't seem to shred the line like I expected.
Overall a good line."
