A very versatile rod,May 4, 2009
By Z06Vettefrom Pennsylvania
"I recently purchased a Legend Elite EFW906.4 rod. I bought it as a replacement for an older Legend Ultra of the same size and weight. I had good service with the Legend Ultra using it primarily for trophy trout as well as Great Lakes steelhead. The Legend Ultra fished well in a variety of conditions and served me well. The Legend Elite is another step better. It's smoother, lighter, and more powerful. It has the ablity to easily cast farther than anybody probably should yet fishes very well with short casts at close range. It loads quite smoothly and is a pleasure to cast. I own several high end rods by other manufacturers and this rod compares quite favorably to them. It's a great rod. I highly recommend it."

High End Rod - Great Price,September 24, 2008
By Kollmanfrom Lawrence, KS
"I bought this rod as a back up to my Scott S3 and found it to be very comparable. This rod has a great feel and really loads nice. I have been able to toss line just as well as my higher priced rods and probably get a little rougher when fighting the big fish because I am not worried about breaking a $700 rod. Plus if you do happen to break one of these babies by fighting off the tip rather than the butt, the St Croix boys will fix you up fast. Great rod for the money and you won't be disappointed. 4.5 stars for me."

Croix Elite v. Ultra,September 10, 2008
By CTG57from Rapid City, SD
"Because the local Cabela's didn't have a St. Croix Elite or Ultra in stock, I had to order both models to determine which one had the better action. I needed a 4wt for fishing the Black Hills, WY, MT, and CO trout... something that was able to pitch nymphs and handle small tippets but could also handle large streamers in the fall when the browns get aggressive. So I ordered both models, with the SLA reel combo and GPX line. The Legend Elite rod (which was more expensive) was super stiff... like a broom stick! The Ultra had a good finesse feel. So I purchased the Ultra and also traded out the GPX line for credit towards the new sharkskin line by SA...... which by the way is an incredible line and def worth the money. I like St. Croix rods and am not sure if there was a mix up in labeling the Elite rod as a 4 weight. At any rate, they still make a good rod."

St. Croix Legend Elite EFW865-4,September 2, 2008
By Zugbugzfrom Avondale, AZ
"I recently purchased St Croix's Legend Elite fly rod, model EFW865-4. I was unable to test cast one before purchasing, as our local Cabelas didn't carry it in stock. From prior experience with St Croix's wonderful fly rods, I had high expectations and went ahead and made the blind internet purchase. I had a Legend Ultra in the same size on hand and was anxious to compare the two. The Ultra is a fine rod and is rated as fast action. The new Elite is also rated fast, but its rendention of fast is indeed on another level. Having cast the Sage TCR before, I was taken with how similar this rod felt to it. Like the TCR, it feels extremely stiff in hand, but when you cast it, the rod really comes into its own, especially with more line out for a longer cast. This rod is a Ferrari in a sea of sedans. Its got the racy looks, is very light (both in weight and in the hand) and extremely high performance in nature. This rod is a loaded cannon! I wasn't expecting it to cast well up close but it does about as good as the Ultra, which is to say, very good. It will really throw some nice tight loops and has more feel than you would expect before casting it. At distance, it blows the Ultra away and has more power than any rod I've cast except maybe the Sage TCR. It will pull a big bugger, bunny leach etc out of the water with ease and cast it as far as your skill allows. This is a great streamer rod, which is why I purchased it in the first place. It feels stiffer than a Z-Axis, but loaded with a fish on, it bends in about the same place and plays a fish about the same. I haven't really tested it for tippet protection with a light tippet and dry fly, but I didn't purchase it as a dry fly rod. I suspect it will do OK, but I don't think it won't be as good in that regard as a softer rod. I also think the 8'6" will be just a bit stiffer in feel than a 9 footer would be, but I bought this for medium streams and fishing streamers, so the 8'6" seemed the better choice. If you are in the market for a TCR, you might also try the Elite (if you can find one) and test cast it beside the TCR. For about half the price of the TCR, you might just buy the Elite! Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and recommend the Elite wholeheartedly, especially if you like to throw the big stuff!"
