Well made parka,March 9, 2009
By Tafofrom Cleveland, OH
"The parka is waterproof, breathable and insulated with Thinsulate. It is good for moderately cold weather. If you wish to use it for extremely cold weather, you will have to wear an additional insulating layer. It works best im moderate temperatures where there is wet snow, sleet or rain or a mix of these. The Gore-tex outer shell provides good protection from wind and moisture - but this is not a parka for extreme cold weather unless you wear additional insulating layers underneatth. It probably works best in winter conditions you would encounter in areas with moderate winters."

disappointing,February 9, 2009

"The concept of a parka has the Minnesota conotation of a warm coat that can be used in cold weather. This is a very light coat - probably good to 20 above. You would be better off with a jacket type coat. I returned it."

Gore-Tex Trooper Parka,February 9, 2009
By SARVOLfrom Oregon
"I've used this parka in rain and snow and it is very comfortable and warm. I haven't yet experienced very cold weather (in the teens) with it, but it should do fine if under layering is appropriate for the temps. Plenty of pockets for storage. A good deal for the price."

Good but not without shortcomings,January 29, 2009
By mix579
"My quest for the perfect parka continues... This is a nice parka but not perfect.
It took me a while to get used to the velcro outside pockets. The good thing about them is that you won't end up with broken zippers or torn off buttons. But with bulky items in the pockets I never feel absolutely confident that the pocket will stay closed. It has three insight pockets. One is zippered and okay but a tad small. The second is a pouch like pocket and I don't feel comfortable at all putting anything in. The third is a small cell phone pocket, which may be nice for a Nokia but it's too narrow for my iPhone. Plus, what's the point of having it inside so that you have to open the jacket when it rings?
As others have pointed out the Thinsulate insulation is on the light side. Without some serious additional clothing it simply doesn't keep you warm enough in the cold Northeast winter.
The main drawback is the hood. It is basically part of the collar. The good thing is that it doesn't let any wind through, however, it is very uncomfortable if you sit, for example, in a car seat as the hood won't lie flat and bulks up on your back. Also, it's impossible to pull the hood up when the front zipper is all closed, so you have to open the zipper, put the hood on, and then pull the zipper up again. For me, that's a major design flaw.
Overall, it does the job. It seems indeed water-proof although I haven't had a chance to test it in severe rain. But it's not the answer to my dreams of a perfect parka..."

Trooper Parka,January 27, 2009
By Psibbfrom Discovery Bay, Ca
"This is a jacket well worth owning. It has warmth without the bulk, the outside is supple and not stiff, the outside zipper is large & easy to operate, and the pockets are many. When it came time for me to get a new jacket, I ordered and sent back several before I recieved this one. Save yourself time and money, order this one first."

Best Winter Coat I ever bought,January 21, 2009
By ChainsawManfrom Chicago
"I shopped for weeks looking for the best outer shell for my winter camping training course. This parka had everything I was looking for starting with Gor-Tex to keep the snow and rain out. The two adjustable cords, one at the waist and one at the bottom keep the cold out really well. The Thinsulate insulation works great with or without layers. The hood is the other bullet proof part of this parka. Once you zip it up there is very little left exposed to get cold. The velcro close cuffs complete the system and keep the cold out there. Our winter campout on January 9th in the Chicago area brought a blizzard from the time we got there at dark pretty much until we left about 24 hours later. My tent had snow half way up the sides the next morning. This parka was awesome throught the entire experience, if you want bulletproof, this is the winter parka for you. Great for walking the dog too."

Not so warm..,December 18, 2008
By Anonymousfrom Hudson Valley, New York
"Things I didn't like: The description for this parka says "get the ultimate weather protection" and your "core temp. is kept constant..". Well it does neither for me. In 35deg. weather (above freezing) with only 10-15mph winds I was cold in <5min. which is the time it takes me for my cigarette break. I had tightened the cord strings around the waist and again down by the thighs pretty well to make a seal but I did not feel warm nor like I was at "room temperature"/body temp.. I was not shivering but felt slightly cold. If I felt that way with above freezing temps, what about 15-25deg. that we usually get here? I kept finding myself fiddling with the coat and trying to get the zipper up higher or raising the collar, etc. Just did not feel anywhere close as my Montana parka or other winter coats I have but maybe I should not be comparing it to those. I consider this a light or mild-winter coat and for cold Fall days, but not something you 'd want to wear here in the North East during winter unless it's around 40deg. I think 200 grams of Thinsulate is not enough for this large coat. I have 200 Thinsulate (less than 1/2 pound) in some of my Cabela's boots and gloves.. Spreading 200 grams over a large area like such as a Parka is not sufficient insulation IMO. The hood also hangs too high - right behind the back of your head as others said, and is always poking your head, especially when in the car driving, and becomes bothersome because it's the outter Gore-Tex shell that is of harder material.
Now the good points: The Gore-Tex Trooper Parka seems to be made well and of good quality. It is a good looking coat and well proportioned with many pockets. It is definitely water-proof as I spend 30min. out in the freezing rain & sleet cleaning my car and the wife's and was completely dry when I came in. The hood does seal your head very well when your tighten it up, and the coat is pretty comfortable overall, except a little oversized as most of Cabelas coats are.
This coat was on sale when I purchased it plus I got another $20 off the price from a promotional offer so for the price I paid, I can't complain too much. Had I paid full price, I would most likely have returned the coat because I thought I was buying a real winter coat, that could perform in real North East winters or sub-freezing temps. At least that's how I interpret Cabela's statement of "ultimate weather protection" which is a bit misleading. If the coat is relatively light (like this one but NOT ultra-light), then chances are it won't keep you warm. I 'm well into my 40's and have bought many different type of coats over the years. My father once told me when I was 14 to judge most clothing items by their weight and he wasn't wrong. Every coat I 've had that kept me warm, was always relatively "heavy". The Trooper's Parka is not."

Cabelas Gore-Tex Trooper Parka- Regular,December 9, 2008
By HotGuyintheCity
"The Trooper Parka is the third piece of outerwear, Cabela's, I have purchased from Cabela's, this winter, 2008-2009.The first was a down Parka, the second was the Trooper jacket. The Trooper Parka is primo quality, zippers and all the pockets, and the hood is fantastic, definitely not skimpy. I have tried all three and all three laugh at the cold and the wind, and I mean windproof. I like the Trooper Parka because the length keeps my rump warm. I will not hesitate to purchase another piece of outerwear when I see something I like and now, most importantly, I know I am purchasing quality products. Three for three is excellence! I am spoiled!"

GREAT COAT EXCEPT FOR HOOD,November 22, 2008
By ReviewTeamfrom Springfield MA
"The Trooper Parka is a great coat except for the hood. Instead of putting the hood behind the collar (& making it removable with a zipper), the designers made the hood part of the collar (like the hooded 300 gram fleece jacket). This means that is is always bunched up at your neck when you are sitting or driving. The hood doesn't lay flat. And, however you have your hair combed, removing the hood usually messes your hair up. On the plus side is the fact that they put pockets on the chest (& at waist) instead of the slash pockets found on most of their parkas and jackets. With slash (diagonal) pockets at the chest, small bulky items placed in the pockets will wind up at your side and your arms will be pressing on the items. There are a total of eight pockets including three inside. It is hard to find parkas from Cabela's that have more than one inside pocket. Another nice item is that they use Velcro type closures and zippers instead of old-fashioned metal snaps. I would have liked a little longer neck strap with more hook & loop closure on it=more space, so that I could easily wear my sound suppressing ear muffs when using the snow blower. The parka is warm (with 200 gram), although I'd like 300 gram Thinsulate or Thermolite to equal that of down. Cabela's sizes are always 1 size smaller than other mfg. 2XL= XL elsewhere. And, their sleeves (regular size) are usually longer than other sellers, which can be a problem when you wash your hands... Another dislike that is on their rain parkas too-- they put a visor bill (like a baseball cap) on the hood. This always blocks your view, unless you fold it backwards. It's only advantage is if it is raining. If raining, you tilt head down anyways. Unfortunately, I will be returning the coat (unused) because of the placement of the hood."

Excellent item but, sized too small.,November 4, 2008
By SafetyMedic
"Ordered the previous version of this item last year, size XXL, and it was too small. Appeared to be an excellent item though. Took a chance and ordered this newer version of the goretex parka. Same story, size was much smaller than the normal Cabela's XXL which has always fitted me a little large to allow freedom of movement and extra layering. Product appeared to be of equal or better quality than the previous version. If this was normally sized it would be a five star item."
