Better than Expected,October 7, 2008
By fishingforfreedomfrom Indiana
"Like the horseback review said, the instruction booklet is absolutely worthless. In fact it's more frustrating trying to read the booklet and figure things out, than if you just throw it across the room and start discovering how it works for yourself. But the unit has no flaws that I've seen so far. I bought it for geocaching and everything has worked perfectly. I had a little trouble trying to get it to interact with a couple different websites, but again, with a little more "button pushing" I finally figured out how to get everything to interact without any problems. The software works great. I've never lost signal strength. Overall after the first initial hour or two I spent learning the "ins and outs" of it, I have no complaints and I would recommend this unit to anyone. With a better booklet I might've even given it 6 stars."

great handheld,September 22, 2008

"this replaced an old garmin that had many miles on it, and gave up on my last trip. this is much easier to use than the older versions, yet is still compact and light for backpacking. screen is easy to read even in direct light - being able to load topo's is a great feature - as well as the compass that works even when not moving. hope to put many many miles on this one."

Etrex Summit and Trail Riding,July 1, 2008
By DavidOhiofrom Trail Rider for 30 some years and this unit helps!
"I have spent the last 3 months or so (this was written 7/1/08) using the Etrex Summit HC. I purchased the "bundled" package including the US Topo software because we use the GPS for horse back riding primarily in Ohio/Michigan/PA. Some of the positives: Very good reception in the forest. I have not seen any time where I lost signal strength. The map is easy to zoom in on and read (even with 50 year old eyes!). It is small enough to fit in my shirt pocket or looped over the saddle horn and not get in the way. Battery life is extremely good. I have used regular "throw aways" and re-chargables with good life. Map software was a piece of cake to install, and up/downloading tracks to the PC is also easy. I save all my routes on the PC to share with friends and make maps of for later use. It works well with Google Earth also. Some of the negatives: The manuals are pretty much useless. When the unit was new, setup was pretty much "figure it out on your own". I'm PC literate but there are a lot of things to set up and the instructions aren't much help. It takes a while to understand all the little things of the tracking feature, but if you are patient, this is a good system.
I primarily bought this unit so when we are in some "remote" locations for trail riding that we can find our way back. It has worked well and survived some harsh treatment. If you buy this, be prepared to spend some time learning it. I would say that if you are "computer challenged", get a friend to help!"

Met / Exceeded Expectations,May 19, 2008
By BigRedVikingfrom Williamsburg, KY
"This is an excellent GPS! I've never owned any brand of GPS other than Garmin and have never been disappointed. This is my third Garmin...each one purchased simply as an upgrade, not because one quit. Every one is still in service! The Garmin Summit HC is a great little GPS unit that has met and/or exceeded all of my expectations. Add that to the other items in the bundle pack and it's a great value!"
