Great little handheld unit,March 24, 2009
By JohnTNfrom Oakland, Tennessee, USA
"I bought this unit as a replacement for the ETrex H -- a good little basic GPS that costs half as much as the ETrex Summit, but doesn't have a compass or altimeter and can't be connected to a PC. The Summit has all of those feature, and a color screen as well. In addition, seems to get more life out of a set of batteries than the ETrex H -- though I would definitely recommend NimH rechargeables for maximum battery life. It will work with good-quality alkaline batteries, but they won't last as long.
In field testing, this unit was outstanding. It locked up the sattelites quickly, tracked well and marked its waypoints precisely. It claims 10-foot accuracy, and from what I have seen, it delivers in that regard.
I am using it to "scout out" some deer-hunting property I own, and I was delighted to find that the Summit connects easily to my PC and can exchange waypoints with DeLorme's Topo USA 7.0 mapping software. Now, for the first time, I can really see (on an aerial photo map) just where my food plots, stands, and blinds are located on the property. The property is heavily wooded and brush covered; but I was able to plot the property lines from a survey using DeLorme. Then by transferring the corner points from the DeLorme plot to the Summit, I was actually able to make my way through the brush and find the corner survey markers on the property.
Since I've been using this unit, I thought of many other possible uses -- such as measuring shot distances (if you don't have a rangefinder), or finding your way back to that carefully hidden treestand WITHOUT tying a bunch of ribbon markers to branches along the way.
I have used a Garmin GPS unit in my car for a while now, and I expected a good product from them in a hand-held GPS. I was NOT disappointed."

summit hc,March 23, 2009

"im new to the world of gps but am very pleased with this product. i spend nearly all of my off time in the sticks so it has been a great companion. its small and light. the display is bright and clear. the operating system is ok but takes persistence to learn. it picks up sat. signals quickly and best of all has an altimeter which is a must. it is definately not meant to be a road navigator, but for an outdoors freak like me it is perfect and has all the needed features. battery life is not as long as advertised and the page scroll is somethimes awkward but is otherwise an awesome unit."

Garmin etrex Summit gps,January 27, 2009
By PAFlintlockhunterfrom PA
"First time out with new unit, I hunted a new area. The GPS helped me figure out distances to rivers and roads. We set up drives using the data from it. The tracks program also came in handy when we needed it to get back on a wounded deer. Simple to use, great info from topo maps we down loaded. Two of my friends ordered one the next day. The electronic compass was also a big upgrade from the old units. My old gps would lose the signal in dense cover, not the Summit. GREAT!"

Very easy to use GPS,December 2, 2008
By rgniedsfrom WI
"I've played around with a lot of GPS units and this is by far the most user friendly unit that i have found. its much easier to use than a lowrance model. the only reason that i am rating it a 4 is because i have not found a way to download lake contours onto the GPS but if your just using it for hunting or hiking i would reccomend this unit every time."

An Improvement,October 6, 2008
By jstarckfrom Lusk, WY
"After losing an older vista I purchased the summit HC and am very pleased. The thing I like the most is the noticable improvement in signal. I used to have trouble with getting signal in heavy timber but have been able to get out everywhere with the new HC."
